Deep Learning with Audio Signals: Prepare, Process, Design, Expect

Transcript Choi: I’m Keunwoo Choi from Spotify, I’m working as a research scientist, and the talk title, Deep Learning with Audio Signal, will be a gentle, quick introduction about, what would you do, how would you do when you happen to be in a situation where you suddenly have to work on audio signal, or music maybe, speech, sound, whatever, with the machine learning. A very quick introduction of myself, I studied some of acoustic, a bit of machine learning and MIR, music information retrieval. Now I’m in a team called MIQ, which is mostly in New York and some in London, and everyone’s working on a slightly different topic within an umbrella named MIR, which is basically music and machine learning, mostly music signals and machine learning. After this talk you will probably have some idea about how you start with your task with the machine learning and audio signal, and maybe after working on and on you will quickly get to know a bit more about the thing that I cover with this talk, so think of it as a good starting point or baseline, I’m assuming you’re a beginner on audio, and music, and speech, or sound- and maybe also some of MIR, or deep learning and machine learning. We’ll be covering pretty much every bit of everything very shallowly and quickly. It doesn’t include how would you do music recommendation with Spotify, that’s a bit different topic from my talk. The content of the talk will be about these four different sections, this chronological order about the whole task. How would you prepare the dataset and how would you deal with the audio signal? How do you process the signals so that it could be better and it could be nicer to the model you […]

5 Fun, Fit (and Mostly Free) Summer Activities for Kids

5 Fun, Fit (and Mostly Free) Summer Activities for Kids

Every parent knows how challenging it can be to get their kids off the couch and keepthem moving and playing. Summer break means that kids have more time to spend on simply being kids. But these days, children are less active than they’ve ever been. According to a study done in 2016, children tend to gain weight faster when they’re not at school, increasing their risk of obesity. Without daily recess, kids can easily become stationary. Regular exercise not only keeps them physically healthy – it can also improve their mood, brain function and memory. Here are a few easy ways to help keep your kids active this summer while instilling an appreciation for exercise at a young age. 1. Create “exercise play” with fun, inexpensive toys. Get back to the classics that you enjoyed as a child. Jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, hula hoops and kites are all cheap toys that will motivate your kids to move. Simply giving them the tools for movement can help redirect their energy when they’re bored. 2. Try yoga. Yoga has endless benefits for kids, both mentally and physically. It’s also free and requires no equipment – just pick a spot on the floor, find a yoga instructor on YouTube and press play. You’ll be surprised at how easily your kids catch onto some of the poses and love pushing themselves to do handstands and other tricks. 3. Combine your kids’ interests with exercise. It can be hard to motivate the more artistic or academic kids to move, but there are ways to make exercise more appealing. If your child loves art, go on a hike to find natural supplies for an art project, like leaves, acorns and flowers. If they love animals, walk around the dog park one day. Showing them ways […]

How Virtual reality can Improve Spatial Ability

How Virtual reality can Improve Spatial Ability

Ever wondered why the global adoption of Virtual reality is growing exponentially in recent years…?! If VR media was just hype for its glamour, then it might not have reached its current stage. Every other day we are seeing incredible case studies getting published which evident the benefits of VR implementation in enterprise workforce training and other learning spaces. Most reports show up remarkable numbers such as up to 90% knowledge retention rate, 80% productivity increase…etc. There is a strong underlying truth which continuously fuels the growth of VR technology. It is not the technical supremacy or first of its kind aspects. But the astonishing biological factors which directly influences the human brain in a much deeper way. This might look a complex subject…. but, believe me, it’s so interesting to learn about our brain using our brain…!! Let’s get started… Learning by Doing “I hear and I forgot, I see and I remember, I do and I understand- Confucius, 551BC – 479BC” “After two weeks, the human brain remembers 10% of what it read, 20% of what it hears and 90% of what it does.” – American educator Edgar Dale – 1946 Though these famous statements are subjective and the numbers may be debatable, we can’t deny the core underlying fact that “what we learn through hands-on experience” gives utmost knowledge and wisdom. But experiential learning always comes at a cost, takes time and they also can’t be replicated or shared. What are Real-Experiences? Let’s try to understand how our brain interprets real-world experiences and conceives a sense of presence. The brain understands the space and the boundary between the area around our body and what is the rest of the world. This is the space known as peri-personal space where most of our interactions with the world […]

Does CBD Help or Hinder Sleep?

Does CBD Help or Hinder Sleep?

(mspoint/iStock) What most of us wouldn’t give for a good night’s sleep. Without it, we can’t function at peak emotional, physical, and mental levels, yet in today’s high-stress, plugged-in world, so many of us don’t get decent sleep. Ailments like insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and excessive daytime sleepiness cause consumers to turn to over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals for relief, yet many of these medications have their own serious side effects and adverse risks. Catching Zzz’s With CBD?Find a CBD Store Near You START EXPLORING For that reason, many consumers are exploring natural sleep aids like cannabis. We know THC-rich varieties can help people achieve sleep, but what about those sensitive to or afraid of its intoxicating effects? Can cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating cannabis compound, also offer sleep benefits? CBD and Sleep: What Does the Research Say? As CBD has exploded onto the market, consumers are turning to the cannabinoid to treat many ailments, including insomnia. The insurgence of CBD has also prompted a sizable uptick in the number of preclinical and clinical studies looking at CBD’s value in treating a whole host of disorders. However, very few studies center on CBD and sleep. In a recent Consumer Reports survey on CBD, 10% of respondents report using CBD as a sleep aid. The majority of them said it worked, but that evidence is anecdotal. Without controlled studies, it is difficult to tell whether CBD is truly acting alone to induce sleep. There are several complicating factors. First, high-CBD strains often contain myrcene , a terpene that is said to be sedating. Although controlled studies on humans are lacking, myrcene’s sedative effects are well established in the animal literature, and for centuries, herbalists have been using hops as a human sleep aid. As it turns out, hops have high myrcene levels. […]

Herbal Chinese Remedies May Help Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a common form of dementia that is known to destroy memory and other cognitive functions earning the moniker of being known as the brain wasting disease. Not only does this condition severely reduce quality of life but it carries a heavy burden for the family and society. Treatments for this debilitating disease are largely ineffective and can have serious side effects, making it paramount to find new strategies to be deployed against this disease. In this review studies were analyzed that examined the active components of Chinese herbal medicines and their therapeutic effects on AD. One of the active compounds reviewed was ginsenoside Rg1 extracted from ginseng root. This compound helps by exerting a gamma secretase inhibitor effect that reduces amyloid beta aggregation that plays a role in the development of this disease, and it also inhibits programmed cell death of nerve cells. Tanshinone IIA derived from red sage root and baicalin derived from the root of Chinese skullcap were found to inhibit oxidative stress injury in nerve cells. Icariin extracted from barrenwort was found to help reduce amyloid beta levels and the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein; it was also found to inhibit oxidative stress and programmed cell death. Huperzine A derived from toothed clubmoss was found to exhibit a cholinesterase inhibitor effect. Evodiamine extracted from evodia fruit and curcumin extracted from turmeric were found to exhibit anti-inflammatory actions. According to the researchers their findings suggest active components from these Chinese herbal medicines may help in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease because they have multi-target effects and fewer side effects. While current there is not a known cure for this disease, treatment is typically focused on improving the quality of life. Along with the remedies mentioned above acupuncture may help to boost moods and cognitive functions […]

Worried about your heart? How many pushups you can do indicates cardiovascular health status

Worried about your heart? How many pushups you can do indicates cardiovascular health status

( Natural News ) Pushups are one of the most common body weight exercises, and a study suggests that they may indicate the health of your heart . The study, which was published in JAMA Network Open , found that men who can do at least 40 pushups had lower risk of cardiovascular disease outcomes. The findings suggested that simple exercises like pushups could indicate heart health status. Led by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health , the study assessed the stamina of 1,104 middle-aged male firefighters. The participants underwent a pushup test at the beginning of the study. Then, they were followed for a decade – from 2000 to 2010 – for researchers to see if they suffered from a cardiovascular event, such as coronary heart disease , heart failure, or cardiac arrest . Each year, every participant completed physical exams and health and medical questionnaires. Being physically fit is a known predictor of health status. However, it can be too costly and time-consuming for physicians to measure an individual’s fitness level during a routine visit if they use treadmill tests and other current tools that assess physical fitness. Therefore, the researchers used pushups to measure the participants’ physical fitness. During the study period, the researchers recorded 37 cardiovascular events. All except for one occurred in men who completed 40 or fewer pushups. They found that participants who could do at least 11 pushups had a lower risk of cardiovascular events compared with those who could do 10 or fewer. Those who completed more than 40 pushups had the greatest reduction in risk. They had a 96 percent lower risk of cardiovascular events compared with those who did fewer than 10 pushups. Boost memory and mood by treating yourself to some dark chocolate

Boost memory and mood by treating yourself to some dark chocolate

( Natural News ) Chocolates are a delicious treat that can cheer up anyone who’s having a stressful day. According to a recent study, eating dark chocolates, in particular, can help relieve stress and improve your mood. Researchers from Loma Linda University led the study, and they presented their findings at the Experimental Biology 2018 annual meeting in San Diego. Dark chocolate is rich in fiber and antioxidants that can help prevent cell damage due to free radicals. The bitter and earthy treat also improves blood flow, lowers blood pressure, and minimizes the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Dark chocolate and brain wave frequency Scientists found that consuming dark chocolate helps change your brain wave frequency, which can improve memory and reduces stress. For the study, Dr. Lee Berk, associate dean of research at the School of Allied Health Professions at Loma Linda University , and his fellow researchers used 48-gram bars of dark chocolate made from 70 percent cocoa beans from Tanzania. Dr. Berk explained that consuming antioxidant-rich foods like dark chocolate helps alter brain frequency via gamma , a beneficial brain frequency. This gamma frequency is “up-regulated, enhanced, [and] turned on” by the antioxidants in dark chocolate. Brain waves come in different frequencies, similar to radios. The highest is gamma frequency, and it is linked to “the highest level for cognitive processing, for memory, [and] recall.” Gamma waves address complex functions such as stress reduction, information processing, and improving memory. Memory Is Impaired By Prescription Blood Pressure Meds, But Pomegranate Juice Improves Blood Pressure And Cognitive Function

Health NATURALNEWS.COM Struggling to find clinical benefits for statin drugs and blood pressure medications, a team of researchers put two drug protocols to the test to see their effects on human thinking and memory. The research, funded by the maker of the drugs (AstraZeneca), hoped to find cognitive benefits for candesartan and hydrocholorothiazide, rosuvastatin, or a combination of the protocols. The study was published online in Neurology, the medical journal for the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). The AAN represents the world’s largest association of neurologists and neuroscience professionals and is dedicated to promoting the highest quality patient-centered neurological care. Neurologists find out that statin and high blood pressure meds do not improve oxygen-rich blood flow to the brain The study found that the statin and the high blood pressure med were unable to slow declines in thinking and memory of human participants. Even though heart disease is closely linked to problems with thinking and memory, the statin and high blood pressure medications were unable to improve blood flow to the brain and slow cognitive decline over a six-year period. “Heart disease has been linked to problems with thinking and memory, so we examined whether managing heart disease with medications like blood pressure and cholesterol lowering drugs can reduce some of those cognitive problems,” said study author Jackie Bosch, Ph.D., of the Population Health Research Institute and the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The study included over 1,600 adults with an average age of 74. According to vital signs, all were determined to have a one percent chance of having a heart attack or other cardiac event that same year. At least 45 percent of the participants had stage two hypertension or high blood pressure. The participants were given physicals every six months […]

How Grief Shows Up In Your Body

How Grief Shows Up In Your Body

July 11, 2019 — It’s surprising how physical grief can be. Your heart literally aches. A memory comes up that causes your stomach to clench or a chill to run down your spine. Some nights, your mind races, and your heart races along with it, your body so electrified with energy that you can barely sleep. Other nights, you’re so tired that you fall asleep right away. You wake up the next morning still feeling exhausted and spend most of the day in bed. Amy Davis, a 32-year-old from Bristol, TN, became sick with grief after losing Molly, a close 38-year-old family member, to cancer. "Early grief was intensely physical for me," Davis says. "After the shock and adrenaline of the first weeks wore off, I went through a couple of months of extreme fatigue, with nausea, headaches, food aversion, mixed-up sleep cycles, dizziness, and sun sensitivity. It was extremely difficult to do anything . … If there’s one thing I want people to know about grief, it’s how awful it can make your body feel." What causes these physical symptoms? A range of studies reveal the powerful effects grief can have on the body. Grief increases inflammation , which can worsen health problems you already have and cause new ones. It batters the immune system , leaving you depleted and vulnerable to infection. The heartbreak of grief can increase blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. Intense grief can alter the heart muscle so much that it causes " broken heart syndrome ," a form of heart disease with the same symptoms as a heart attack. Stress links the emotional and physical aspects of grief. The systems in the body that process physical and emotional stress overlap, and emotional stress can activate the nervous system as easily […]

Brain Implants Made of Graphene - What is Possible?

Image Credits: Mopic/shutterstock.com By Angela Betsaida B. Laguipo, BSN, RN Technological advancement shows promise in various disciplines, including in the world of medicine. Over the past few years, humans have developed advanced technologies that contributed to breakthroughs improving the quality of life and performance of humans. One of these innovations is the development of the brain implant. What are Brain Implants? Brain implants, or neural implants, are devices directly connected to the human brain, usually on its surface. These devices are used to help patients with brain disorders by electrically stimulating, recording or blocking signals from neurons in the brain. How Do Brain Implants Work? Brain implants can be used in a variety of applications. These are technical systems mainly used to stimulate some parts of the brain or nervous system. As a result, the device boosts senses, memory or physical movement. They are usually used to replace damaged tissue or part of the brain. A brain implant restores cognitive function by gathering data from one brain area, processing the information and delivering the resulting signal to another region of the brain. Brain Implant Applications Depression Doctors have developed many different ways to treat depression; however, for patients who haven’t responded to treatments, deep brain stimulation (DBS), or sending electrical shocks directly to some brain areas, is recommended. Though this method is promising, it has shown many inconsistencies. However, a new study from scientists at the University of California, San Francisco proposes the use of brain implants or electrodes. These will be attached to the lateral portion of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), which is an area for decision making, mood regulation and emotion processing. This area has also been linked to the development of depression. Parkinson’ Disease In another study, self-tuning brain implants could help treat patients with Parkinson’s […]

Government scientists are starting to peek into the brains of people caught in the nation’s opioid epidemic, to see if medicines proven to treat addiction, like methadone, do more than ease the cravings and withdrawal. Do they also heal a brain damaged by addiction? And which one works best for which patient? They’re fundamental questions considering that far too few of the 2 million opioid users who need anti-addiction medicine actually receive it. One reason: "People say you’re just changing one drug for another," said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who is leading that first-of-its-kind study. The Kratom controversy: Is it a friend or a foe?

Kratom is a medicinal herb that comes with many positive and negative health impacts. © Shutterstock Kratom, the plant that has long been used in Southeast Asia has landed in the middle of a controversy after it made inroads in the American market for health supplements. Even the FDA has warned consumers not to use this plant’s extracts as a supplement. The FDA is concerned about the fact that kratom, which affects the same opioid brain receptors as morphine, has properties that expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse and dependence. Though it is legally available in the US, some other countries like Thailand, Australia, Malaysia and a few European countries have banned its use. KRATOM CAN CAUSE TOXICITY A new study has also contributed to the controversy by questioning the use of this natural supplement for the treatment of opioid addiction and pain . The study was conducted at the Binghamton University for a retrospective review of kratom exposure and to determine the toxicities associated with its use. Scientists also reviewed records from a County Medical Examiner’s Office in New York State to identify the fatalities associated with this herb. According to one of the researchers involved in this study, though kratom is not as strong as some other prescription opioids, it does still act as an opioid in the body. In larger doses, it can slow down breathing and act as a sedative meaning that patients can develop the same toxicity they would if using another opioid product. This herb can also reportedly cause seizures and liver toxicity. Scientists believe that kratom may have a role in treating pain and opioid use disorder, but more research is needed to verify its safety and efficacy. During the study, a total of 2312 kratom exposures were reported, with […]

How To Build A Memory Palace That Improves Your Writing – Part 2

How To Build A Memory Palace That Improves Your Writing – Part 2

Writing involves a great deal of reference to memory, whether you’re a non-fiction writer trying to keep track of vital dates, a fantasy author trying to hold a whole fictional history in your head, or a writer of literary fiction who needs to keep each character ‘real’ by knowing their entire life story. For authors, memory techniques aren’t just about making life a little easier (although that’s nice too.) Knowing the facts on which your work turns is different from just being able to look them up , and the easier it is to internalize information and allow it to mix and evolve, the better. Ideas clash, combine, and warp in your subconscious before you commit them to the page. Memorizing information rather than storing it in a notebook feeds this process. Click To Tweet If you’re only joining us for part 2, I recommend taking a few minutes to catch up on part 1 of this article, in which we explored image linking and how recurring images can be used to turn strings of numbers into memorable stories. If, however, you’re clear on those basic memory techniques, let’s move onto the next step: building ourselves a palace. The loci system While we already learned how to remember long strings of information, you’ll have noticed that this technique has a glaring weakness – if the chain breaks, it’s difficult to progress past the point where you got stuck. We patched that hole a little bit by adding markers at relevant points – images that allow you to quickly travel to a given entry in the list – but if we’re going to build a memory palace, we need a better system. In Tricks of the Mind , mentalist Derren Brown explains what he terms the ‘loci system:’ In its […]
