These companies are allowed to police their own products, and they are not held liable when their products contain dangerous levels of heavy metals. Attorney Pedram Esfandiary spoke with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on “The Defender Podcast” to address this serious issue. Esfandiary takes on consumer fraud litigation, pharmaceutical drug liability cases, class actions and toxic tort injuries.

Esfandiary spoke about the recent investigation by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. “They found these metals in leading baby food brands sold across the United States and across the world. Actually, they found that these companies have sold these products and had repeatedly ignored both their own internal safety standards and that of the safety centers of regulators.”

He also said the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t even have a limit for heavy metals in baby food. “These baby food manufacturers basically regulate themselves, and it turns out that in the interest of profits, they simply didn’t care how much heavy metal was in the food,” Esfandiary said. Many of the toxic baby food products are labeled “organic.” These organic ingredients may still contain heavy metals that leach into the soil and the crops through pesticide drift and water table contamination. The “organic” label is often used to claim the product is safer for children, but much of these claims are deceptive marketing practices.

Esfandiary works with clients whose children developed autism after primarily ingesting commercial baby food. “American children ate these foods and we have higher rates of autism all across the country in recent years,” Esfandiary said of the correlation. The lawyer is working on a case involving an eight-year-old boy named Noah whose autism can be correlated to the level of heavy metals he consumed from commercial baby food.

Noah was on a diet of commercial baby foods from four months to three years old. Noah consumed “substantial amounts” of these commercial baby foods, eating repeated portions throughout the day. Despite being fed, Noah’s neurological development suffered over time. He was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, two conditions that have been debilitating for him and his family.

Esfandiary filed a case in the LA State Court and wants to hold baby food manufacturers accountable for the brain damage. Baby food manufacturers knew their products were harmful for years

The worst part about this mass poisoning of babies and toddlers is that the companies have known for years that their products contain high levels of heavy metals. Esfandiary said, “the documents that these companies have already given to congressional investigators show that they knew about this, years and years ago, but for whatever reason, ignored it — and kept selling the product and didn’t bring it to Congress’ attention until 2021.”

According to the company’s own documents, one of the ingredients used in the baby food contains approximately 1,000 parts per billion of arsenic and 100 parts per billion of lead . These levels are scientifically proven to damage the human brain.

Kennedy said the companies can get away with poisoning children because of loopholes provided by the FDA. The agency allows the manufacturers to test individual ingredients instead of the finished product. If multiple ingredients contain high levels of heavy metals but individually do not surpass the FDA’s heavy metal limits, they can still be combined together in the final product. The final product may contain dangerous levels of heavy metals, but the product is ultimately sold to consumers because the individual ingredients were not considered a threat. The FDA is currently implementing new standards called “ Closer to Zero: Action Plan for Baby Foods .”

“The best way to reform this kind of behavior in many cases is litigation,” Kennedy said. “If these companies know that they can get away with anything they want with the [FDA], the one place where they face justice – and are accountable for the harm they’ve imposed on our children – is in the courthouse.”

“Although UV energy has played an important role in the origin and evolution of life, UV absorption by the skin not only triggers mechanisms that defend skin integrity and regulate global homeostasis but also induces skin pathology (e.g., cancer, aging, autoimmune responses).”

These effects are secondary, the paper goes on to reveal, to the transduction of UV electromagnetic energy into chemical, hormonal and neural signals, which are defined by the nature of the chromophores and tissue compartments that receive specific UV wavelengths. UV light can help with autoimmune disorders, mood problems, addictions and obesity

UV radiation also has the ability to upregulate local neuroendocrine axes, with UVB being more efficient at the process than UVA. This induces the production of cytokines, corticotropin-releasing hormone, urocortins, proopiomelanocortin-peptides and enkephalins. Other substances can also be released into circulation to exert systemic effects, including activation of the central hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, opioidogenic effects and immunosuppression, all independent of vitamin D synthesis.

“Similar effects are seen after exposure of the eyes and skin to UV, through which UVB activates hypothalamic paraventricular and arcuate nuclei and exerts very rapid stimulatory effects on the brain,” the paper further explains.

“Thus, UV touches the brain and central neuroendocrine system to reset body homeostasis. This invites multiple therapeutic applications of UV radiation, for example, in the management of autoimmune and mood disorders, addiction, and obesity.”

When one wears sunscreen, it is important to note, none of these benefits are attained because sunblock prevents UV light from penetrating the skin. This is why the sunscreen push and all the fearmongering about skin cancer is so misguided.

By depriving your body of UV light, you are depriving it of a key healing agent that is unmatched in terms of its ability to synthesize with the systems of the body.

A study that was published in the journal Genesis showed that sulforaphane may possess significant therapeutic properties that can fight the underlying pathological disturbances that are seen in people with common neurodegenerative diseases. These include inflammation, neuronal death, increased oxidative stress and perturbed calcium homeostasis. In addition to mitigating these factors, the authors of the study also believe that sulforaphane can stimulate neural stem cell activity.

In the study, the researchers were able to determine the optimal concentration of sulforaphane that can be used to promote neural stem cell growth while keeping neurons intact. They also found that exposing neural stem cells to sulforaphane can lead to their differentiation to neurons, which supports their hypothesis that sulforaphane can indeed stimulate brain repair. And it’s not just the brain that can benefit from sulforaphane . The compound has also been shown to be useful in treating around 200 other health conditions. For example, it has been linked to improved heart health and digestion. It is also believed to have anti-cancer and anti-diabetic effects and may even protect against sun damage. How to get more sulforaphane in your diet

Sulforaphane can be found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, bok choy and cauliflower. Broccoli sprouts are considered to be one of the best sources of sulforaphane.

Researchers note that raw vegetables tend to have higher levels of this beneficial compound than cooked ones, with one study finding raw broccoli to contain 10 times the sulforaphane of cooked broccoli. If you simply cannot consume it raw, it is best to lightly steam cruciferous vegetables to preserve their beneficial compounds. Boiling or microwaving these vegetables is not recommended if you are trying to get the benefits of sulforaphane.

It is important to keep in mind that cruciferous vegetables must be chopped, chewed or cut in order to get the benefits. That’s because sulforaphane is only activated when it comes into contact with an enzyme involved in the defense response of plants known as glucoraphanin, which is released when the plant is damaged.

You can also enhance your intake of sulforaphane by adding mustard powder or mustard seed to your meals. The dietary myrosinase content of mustard seeds and powder can help raise the availability of sulforaphane in foods like broccoli, particularly when you are cooking these vegetables.

Although the researchers believe that further studies are needed, their finding serves as a powerful reminder of just how beneficial nature’s gifts can be when it comes to our health. Including more foods like broccoli in your diet could well have therapeutic value when it comes to brain degenerative disorders , something that is particularly timely as many people deal with the neurological effects of COVID-19 vaccines.

( Natural News ) Xiaoyaosan (XYS) has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat conditions that are linked to anxiety and depression. With this in mind, a group of Chinese researchers conducted a study to explore the science behind XYS’s antidepressant effects.

Traditional Chinese healers have long used XYS to treat what is called liver qi stagnation in TCM. Common symptoms associated with this include irritability, anger, anxiety and depression .

Previous studies have looked into XYS’s antidepressant effects. However, few have demonstrated an association between these and other physiological systems behind depression.

In a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine , researchers from the Hubei University of Chinese Medicine , the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the Henan University of Chinese Medicine investigated whether XYS can influence the function of astrocytes (AST), which are specialized cells found in the brain.

The astrocytic excitatory amino acid transporters 1 (EAAT1) and 2 (EAAT2) are the major transporters that take up synaptic glutamate, the central nervous system’s primary excitatory neurotransmitter. Evidence suggests that excitotoxicity, which damages nerve and brain cells, is associated with depression.

With this in mind, the researchers hypothesized that XYS’s underlying antidepressant-like mechanism is related to the regulation of astrocytic EAATs. Exploring the antidepressant-like mechanism employed by XYS

To explore how XYS works, the researchers conducted an experiment with 80 adult mice divided into four groups. Of these groups, one served as a control while another one was subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) to induce depression but was not given any treatment. The third group was subjected to CUMS but treated with XYS and the final group was treated with fluoxetine hydrochloride. The mice in the control group and the CUMS group received a placebo consisting of 0.5 milliliters (mL) of normal saline for 21 days. The mice in the treatment groups, on the other hand, were given 0.25 grams per kilogram and 2.6 milligrams per kilogram per day of XYS and flouxetine hydrochloride, respectively, during the same 21-day period.

Following the treatment, the mice were subjected to a battery of behavioral tests to observe the effects of XYS. These were an open field test, a forced swimming test and a sucrose preference test.

The researchers also checked the glutamate concentrations in the mice’s prefrontal cortex using colorimetry. The morphology of the neurons in their prefrontal cortexes was observed through Nissl staining.

Meanwhile, the researchers used Western blot assay and immunohistochemistry to detect the expressions of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), NeuN, EAAT1 and EAAT2 proteins in the mice’s prefrontal cortex. They also conducted quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) testing to detect the expression of GFAP, NeuN, EAAT1 and EAAT2 genes.

The results show that XYS treatment caused improvements in CUMS-induced depressive mice by regulating the functions of their ASTs and the EAATs in their prefrontal cortex. CUMS decreased the expression of GFAP, EAAT1, EAAT2 and NeuN but increased glutamate content in the mice’s prefrontal cortex. These changes were all alleviated by XYS treatment.

According to the researchers, their study provides a theoretical foundation for the clinical application of XYS as an alternative treatment for depression. “No one yet has understood how IBD and other chronic gastrointestinal conditions influence behavior and mental health,” said co-senior study author David Artis, a professor of immunology and director of IBD research at Weill Cornell.

For their study, the researchers focused on how well mice would learn and forget a fear trigger using an experiment called “fear conditioning and extinction learning.” In this experiment, the mice are conditioned to associate a threat with the sound of a tone, so that the tone by itself can elicit the same fear response as the threat.

The mice tended to forget the association after repeated exposure to the tone, as their brains adjusted to the fact that the threat no longer exists. But the mice whose guts were germ-free from birth or whose gut microbes were vastly reduced, showed a significant reduction in their ability to learn that the threat was no longer present. This means that their brains were not updating to the new conditions. Mechanism behind gut’s effect on fear memories

The researchers launched a genetic investigation of the mice’s microglia to probe the molecular mechanism behind the effect. Microglia are immune cells in the brain that help stimulate and prune the connections between nerve cells to remodel brain circuits. After looking into the gene expression in the mice’s medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) – a region of the brain crucial for extinction learning – the researchers found that the absence of gut microbes altered the gene expression of microglia in the mPFC. The team also found significant changes in the brain chemicals of the germ-free mice, including altered levels of molecules that play a role in psychiatric conditions like autism and schizophrenia . When the researchers restored gut bacteria in the germ-free mice, they found that it was possible for these mice to unlearn a conditioned fear response only if their gut bacteria were restored soon after birth.

This finding is an important one, as many psychiatric disorders linked to autoimmunity are also associated with problems that occur in the early stages of brain development. The researchers are optimistic that with further studies, their findings will eventually lead to new treatment targets.

The study authors then looked at data from 13,976 individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and 40,697 Finns who were not. According to the researchers, those who took macrolides and lincosamides orally had the strongest risk for Parkinson’s disease . Doctors often prescribe dosages of these two antibiotics to fight microbial infections. Further analysis also revealed that those who took broad-spectrum antibiotics had a higher risk for degenerative disorder.

The researchers also found that those who took anti-anaerobic medications and tetracyclines for 10 to 15 years had a higher chance of developing Parkinson’s disease. On the other hand, they observed the same association in Finns who took sulfonamides, trimethoprim and antifungal medications for one to five years.

Considering changes in the gut microbiota in early and established Parkinson’s disease, the researcher found that antibiotic use can affect gut microbial populations in the long run. Their findings align with previous research saying individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease usually have altered gut microbes. “Exposure to certain types of oral antibiotics seems to be associated with an elevated risk of [Parkinson’s disease]. The pattern of associations supports the hypothesis that effects on gut microbiota could link antibiotics to [the condition], but further studies are needed to confirm this,” the authors concluded. The link between Parkinson’s disease and gut health is emerging

Parkinson’s disease damages the part of the brain responsible for movement. The resulting damage causes hallmark symptoms such as stiffness, shaking and balance problems. Those with constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease have a higher chance of developing the degenerative disorder.

Previous studies have also found that changes in the gut microbiota typically found in those with Parkinson’s disease can occur two decades before they are diagnosed with the disease. (Related: Chinese herbal formula found to protect against Parkinson’s disease .)

Neurologist and study co-author Dr. Filip Scheperjans says: “The link between antibiotic exposure and Parkinson’s disease fits the current view that in a significant proportion of patients, the pathology of Parkinson’s may originate in the gut. [This is] possibly related to microbial changes, years before the onset of typical … motor symptoms.”

But prior to the study, no one had actually investigated whether or not antibiotic exposure had anything to do with Parkinson’s disease. While the team’s research found a link between the two, they noted that further investigations are needed to confirm it.

If later studies arrive at the same findings, doctors prescribing antibiotics against infections should take note of increased susceptibility to Parkinson’s disease as a long-term risk. “The discovery may also have implications for antibiotic prescribing practices in the future,” Scheperjans said.

“In addition to the problem of antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial prescribing should also take into account [the] potentially long-lasting effects on the gut microbiome and the development of certain diseases.”

Such disturbances include oxidative stress, inflammation, perturbed calcium homeostasis, and neuronal death, to name just a few. And one of the ways sulforaphane is believed to do this is by stimulating neural stem cell (NSC) activity in the following ways:

• By upregulating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which increases innate antioxidant mechanisms • By suppressing interleukin-1b (IL-1b), which exerts anti-inflammatory effects Sulforaphane is a distinct phytochemical that has the potential to treat over 200 health conditions

The study looked specifically at whether or not sulforaphane confers neuroprotective benefits through its WnT signaling properties. Wnt signaling has previously been identified as a key molecular pathway involved in tissue regeneration.

For their investigation, researchers investigated the optimal range of sulforaphane needed to promote NSC growth while also protecting healthy neurons against damage. They found that sulforaphane concentrations of less than 5 nM can promote the growth of NSCs while also limiting or preventing cytotoxic damage.

They also determined that sulforaphane does, in fact, modify genes through the Wnt signaling pathway as suspected, and that exposing NSCs to sulforaphane causes differentiation in neurons. This further supports the hypothesis that sulforaphane has the potential to stimulate brain repair.

It turns out that sulforaphane is also an Nrf2 inducer, which together with its Wnt-activating properties makes it distinct from other phytochemicals in terms of its brain-healing potential.

“The e?ects of SFN in restoring Wnt signaling provides a wealth of opportunities for the treatment of stem-cell-related diseases characterized by suppressed Wnt signaling,” the researchers wrote in their conclusion.

“In summary, we demonstrated that the crucifer-derived SFN can e?ectively stimulate NSC proliferation and di?erentiation by modifying genes in Wnt signaling pathway. Due to its lipophilic property and low molecular weight, SFN has a high bioavailability as an orally administered drug.”

SFN is, of course, not a drug. It is a nutrient found naturally in food, and it can also be purchased as a supplement. For research purposes, however, SFN and other food-based compounds are often referred to as “drugs” when they possess therapeutic properties.

The best and easiest way to obtain sulforaphane in therapeutic amounts is to consume broccoli sprouts, as full-grown broccoli does not contain as much of the nutrient – though it is still beneficial to eat regular broccoli, just to be clear.

“Considering that sulforaphane is a naturally occurring biomolecule which has been part of the human diet since time immemorial, it is likely that its regular consumption via culinary practices delivers physiologically significant quantities in a delivery system – food – that is safe and effective in the prevention of disease,” says health expert Sayer Ji.

The researchers found that both saffron and Ritalin were associated with significant improvements in the Parent ADHD Rating Scale at week three, with no significant difference between the two groups at week six. All but one child who received saffron experienced at least a 50 percent improvement in the Parent ADHD Rating Scale, while 21 of those on Ritalin experienced the same effect.

Both groups also garnered marked improvements in the Teacher ADHD Rating Scale as early as week three, with no significant difference between the two groups at weeks three and six. Ten of those who took saffron had a marked improvement of at least 50 percent, while 12 of those on Ritalin experienced the same improvement.

Dr. Greg W. Mattingly of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, who was not part of the study, was impressed by the results. “The fact that these improvements in ADHD symptoms were observed both by parents and teachers was especially encouraging,” Mattingly said.
