Study reveals: Men should eat walnuts to prevent prostate cancer

This is according to researchers from the University of California, Davis , who found that walnuts, aside from helping to reduce excess cholesterol and increasing insulin sensitivity, are also capable of reducing the levels of a protein associated with prostate cancer .

According to nutritionist Paul Davis, who acted as the study’s lead researcher, their findings provide additional evidence that walnuts, despite being high in fats, are actually a great addition to a healthy diet.

As detailed in their study, Davis’ team fed mice — all of which were genetically predisposed to develop prostate cancer — with whole walnuts or walnut oil for 18 weeks. Compared with those that ate the same diet but without walnuts, the walnut-fed mice developed much smaller and slower-growing prostate tumors. The researchers also found that the walnut-rich diet helped reduce prostate cancer growth by 30 to 40 percent.

This, Davis and his team noted, could be linked to the lower levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), a protein strongly associated with prostate cancer , that they observed in the walnut-fed mice. Compounds in walnuts affect the expression of prostate cancer-related genes

Aside from determining the effects of a walnut-rich diet on prostate tumor growth, the researchers’ experiment on mice was also designed to identify which components of walnuts are responsible for their anti-tumor properties. Walnuts are known to be rich in essential nutrients, such as zinc, magnesium and selenium . They are also an excellent source of fiber and essential fats like omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their heart and brain benefits, among others.

To find out if these healthy components, particularly omega-3s, contribute to walnuts’ anti-tumor effects, the researchers used soybean oil as a control. Soybean oil has a similar fatty acid profile to walnuts. The researchers found that while walnuts and walnut oil reduced cholesterol and slowed prostate cancer growth in mice, soybean oil did not. This confirmed their suspicion that other walnut components or a combination of these nutrients are responsible for the improvements, not just omega-3s. On the other hand, the researchers found that walnuts can influence the expression of genes involved in tumor growth and metabolism. “The energy effects from decreasing IGF-1 seem to muck up the works so the cancer can’t grow as fast as it normally would,” Davis explained. “Also, reducing cholesterol means cancer cells may not get enough of it to allow these cells to grow quickly.”

Besides the expression of IGF-1, Davis and his team discovered that some components of walnuts also affected the activities of proteins like adiponectin, the tumor suppressor PSP94 and COX-2, all of which are markers for reduced prostate cancer risk. However, they were not able to pinpoint which compounds in walnuts were involved in slowing prostate cancer growth.

A similar study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio arrived at the same conclusion, with the researchers noting that eating a modest amount of walnuts can help protect men against prostate cancer . These findings are especially important, given the fact that prostate cancer affects one in six American men , making it the most common cancer among men.

According to experts, environmental factors such as diet play an important role in the development of prostate cancer. While it is true that nuts are great foods to add to a healthy diet , they differ in the nutrients and plant compounds that they provide. But with many of us now working from home during the pandemic, this means that any exercise we might have had during our day – whether cycling to work, or walking to get lunch – may no longer exist. While the way we work has changed, that doesn’t mean we can’t easily find ways to be more active during our work day if we look at how we managed to get active while working in an office.

Here are a few things you can try to get you to move more while working from home: 1. Stand up and move while working

Prolonged standing burns more calories than sitting. While this won’t be enough to tackle weight loss, replacing two hours sitting each day with standing can burn up to 130 calories a week , and may improve concentration . Standing more often during your day may also improve glucose, insulin levels, and blood pressure in the long term.

You may be surprised to hear that [fidgeting is also good]. These small, regular movements (such as tapping your foot or shifting position) while sitting also burn more calories by increasing energy expenditure by 5–10% above resting values .

Experts recommend office workers try to get at least two hours a day standing or moving around during work hours – and should build up to four hours, if possible. To start out, try adding at least 30 to 60 minutes of standing into your workday, perhaps by alternating between fifteen minutes standing followed by fifteen minutes sitting. Or perhaps try taking all your calls or meetings while standing. 2. Take “exercise snacks”

Short bursts of exercise – or “exercise snacks” – are beneficial for your health. Previously, it was thought bouts of exercise needed to last longer than ten minutes to be beneficial to our health – but recent research indicates activity of any duration is good for health. Regular exercise also improves memory and even has brain-enhancing effects by improving memory and reducing inflammation in the brain (which can lead to conditions such as Alzheimer’s). Climbing the stairs is a great way to get moving. Try to take regular active movement breaks or exercise snacks during your day. Vigorously climbing three flights of stairs (60 steps) at least three times a day – separated by one to four hours of rest – may improve your fitness .

A lower impact option would be to walk a few laps around your house. Even something as simple as moving rooms to refill your water glass or tea cup can help you get a bit of extra movement in. 3. Exercise at lunchtime (outdoors if possible)

Emerging evidence shows that going outside to exercise during the day in natural settings (such as parks, fields, or near rivers or coastlines) can be beneficial to our mental health and cognitive ability.

One medium orange provides four ounces (or a half cup) of water. Roughly 60-70% of the human body is made of water, and it’s required for every bodily process. Take a few cues from the way the younger generation eats, cooks and grocery shops, and you may be inspired to change what’s on your plate without compromising your diet or derailing your weight-loss plans . Don’t be afraid to tap into an internet full of creative recipes to figure out new ways to cook and diversify the ingredients you work with. What do millennials eat?

“(Millennials) want what they call ‘clean’ food. What they really mean is that they want ‘real’ food,” said Anne VanBeber, professor of nutrition at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. “They are interested in how the preparation of the food, the packaging, and the storing of the food impacts the environment.”

To eat clean means choosing whole foods such as fruits and vegetables instead of processed snacks and ready-made meals with a list of ingredients that are impossible to pronounce,

The younger generation (late 20s and early 30s) tend to choose beverages such as sparkling water, green tea and kombucha over sugary drinks like soda . And instead of buying groceries at big box or multipurpose stores such as Walmart or Costco, they look for more specialized grocers such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, which sell options that are more ethically sourced and contain less processed ingredients, according to a study of 12.5 million millennial social media posts by CBD Marketing.

As you begin your nutritional and weight-loss journey in 2021, consider experimenting with new ingredients and cooking methods that will prevent you from getting bored with your food intake. To get you started, we asked nutrition experts about nine foods from a definitive list of 60 millennial foods by Buzzfeed, a website that reaches nearly 83 percent of millennials, according to Nielsen Holdings.

1. Avocado toast , perhaps the most obvious “millennial” food because it appears on restaurant menus and is a staple of weekend brunch, can make for a nutritious breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. Avocados are a good source of monounsaturated fatty acids, which are heart healthy and serve as a good fat replacement for butter. The fruit (yes, avocados are a fruit) also contains 10 to 11 grams of fiber per avocado, said VanBeber.

“Pairing a third of an avocado with one slice of 100 percent whole grain bread can provide between 15 to 20 percent of daily fiber needs for adults over 50 years of age,” said Elizabeth Spencer, a registered dietitian at Northwestern Medicine Center DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois.

However, be watchful. One medium avocado packs between 250 and 300 calories, so it may be too many calories for a meal or snack, especially when combined with other food items. Older adults often need fewer calories and higher amounts of specific vitamins, minerals and protein, she added.

2. Cauliflower is a vegetable common to many household crispers that has taken on new popularity as a carb replacement in the form of cauliflower crust and rice. For those looking for a savory alternative, there are also versions of cauliflower “wings” and cauliflower “steak.” These are lower in calories and carbohydrates than their starchy meaty counterparts and, obviously, work for vegans and vegetarians.

“Replacing rice with riced cauliflower or wheat in pizza crust with cauliflower can significantly cut down on carbs while retaining fiber, leading to feelings of fullness, as well as increasing daily veggie servings,” said Spencer. “Cauliflower is also a rich source of choline, which aids in muscle movement, metabolism, and nervous system and brain health.” So, clearly, it’s good for people of all ages.

However, cauliflower pizza and snack foods don’t pass as healthy when combined with piles of cheese and pepperoni, which can increase calories and bring up levels of sodium.

“As with other processed foods, the best rule to follow is ‘fewest ingredients is best,’” said Maxine Smith, a registered dietitian with Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition in Ohio.

3. Kale has been a darling of leafy green lovers for years now. It provides nutrients that are important for healthy bones, heart, brain and the gut , says Smith.

It is versatile and can be used in salads and soups, or cooked as a side dish on its own. Most recently, millennials have transformed the ingredient into kale chips, burrito wraps, and juice — another great way to cut the carbs.

However, because it is a cruciferous vegetable (meaning that it contains a sugar called raffinose) it often is left undigested in the gut until bacteria ferments it, leading to gas and bloating, said Spencer. Cooking kale may alleviate the problem.

“Kale also contains a high amount of vitamin K, which helps our blood clot,” said Spencer. “Older adults on blood thinners should be mindful of their vitamin K intake and work with their doctor and registered dietitian to safely fit kale into a healthful eating pattern.”

4. Kombucha is a fermented unpasteurized tea that offers healthy probiotics which can battle inflammation , improve gut health and digestion, said Smith.

It has a vinegary taste, a byproduct of the fermentation process, but has a complex flavor from the sweetness of fruits and other botanicals that often are added to it. Meanwhile, its fizz resembles that of soda, which may be why millennials are drinking these trendier cola alternatives.

But, kombucha can be high in added sugar, with some brands containing up to 4 to 7 teaspoons of sugar per bottle (which is still less than a soda). For reference, the recommended intake of sugar for an entire day is 6 teaspoons or less, said Spencer.

Because it is not pasteurized, it is important to purchase kombucha through a reputable company with quality control, Smith said.

Although the cause of dementia is unknown in many cases, abnormal brain changes and neurodegeneration are believed to trigger the gradual worsening of symptoms experienced by people with dementia.

In a recent study, researchers at the Federal University of Technology Akure in Nigeria investigated the potential of two commonly consumed vegetables in southern Nigeria to help with the management of neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, they looked at the modulatory effects of alkaloids isolated from these vegetables on the activities of enzymes involved in neurodegeneration.

Plants produce alkaloids as part of their defense mechanism against herbivores. Alkaloids are known to have pharmacological properties that benefit human health. According to recent studies, these properties include analgesic, anti-hyperglycemic, antiarrhythmic, antibacterial and anti-cancer activities.

For their experiment, the researchers extracted alkaloids from Lasianthera africana , locally known as editan, and Gongronema latifolium , also known as utazi, and explored their ability to regulate the activities of enzymes involved in neurodegeneration . Specifically, they examined how these alkaloids affected the activity of cholinesterases (e.g., acetylcholinesterase [AChE] and butyrylcholinesterase [BChE]) and the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) in vitro.

AChE is an enzyme found in neuromuscular junctions. Its function is to break down acetylcholine, the chief neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) of the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby terminating impulse transmission between nerves. Low levels of acetylcholine have been found in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia. Inhibiting AChE activity, on the other hand, has been shown to cause improvements in cognition.

BChE is a non-specific enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of choline-based esters , including the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Patients with Alzheimer’s have increased cortical levels of this cholinesterase. Because it also lowers acetylcholine levels in the brain, BChE is often targeted together with AChE for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. MAO is an enzyme involved in the degradation of monoamines released by neurons and other types of brain cells. It is also involved in neurodegeneration because it triggers oxidative stress, which can cause cell damage , impair the DNA repair system and induce mitochondrial dysfunction. All of these events have been linked to the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s .

The researchers also looked at the ability of editan and utazi alkaloids to chelate iron II (Fe2+) and scavenge free radicals — activities performed by antioxidants. They then used gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) to develop an alkaloid profile.

The researchers found that the alkaloids from editan and utazi inhibited AChE, BChE and MAO in a concentration-dependent manner. In particular, the alkaloid from utazi showed a higher inhibitory activity for all three enzymes than the alkaloid from editan. GC-FID analysis revealed an abundance of choline in both extracts, which could be a reason for their cognitive effects.

Inhibitors of a key regulatory enzyme in humans and experimental animals studied in the lab of UC Davis distinguished professor Bruce Hammock may lead to a role in treating people with Alzheimer’s disease by reducing inflammation in the brain.

“Inflammation in the brain, or neuorinflammation, is strongly implicated in Alzheimer’s disease,” said Hammock, co-author of a research paper, “An Epoxide Hydrolase Inhibitor Reduces Neuroinflammation in a Mouse Model of Alzheimer’s Disease,” published Dec. 9 in the journal Science Translational Medicine. Bruce Hammock “This paper is getting worldwide attention, and I hope it stimulates research on the role of lipid mediators in brain health” said Hammock, who holds a joint appointment with the department of entomology and nematology and the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Some 5.8 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills.

A team of eight scientists, led by Hui Zheng of the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, explained that the enzyme, soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), is elevated in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and in an amyloid mouse model with AD. Blocking sEH “may replenish the natural epoxy lipids, combat neuroinflammation, and improve cognition,” they said.

Hammock describes sEH as a key regulatory enzyme involved in the metabolism of fatty acids. It regulates a new class of natural chemical mediators, which in turn resolve inflammation while reducing blood pressure and pain. Hammock and his lab have been involved in research on this enzyme for more than 50 years.

“Inflammatory processes are known to be associated with the pathology and neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Charles DeCarli, director of UC Davis Health’s Alzheimer’s Disease Center, a National Institutes of Health-funded research center funded by the National Institutes of Health. “While the exact mechanisms remain elusive, these new data offer a unique avenue for novel therapeutic development and may be the first step in the process of finding an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.”

DeCarli, who was not involved in the Baylor-UC Davis study, is a distinguished professor of neurology in the Department of Neurology and the Center for Neuroscience. He serves as the Victor and Genevieve Orsi Chair in Alzheimer’s Research and directs the Imaging of Dementia and Aging laboratory.

The team, including three researchers from the Hammock lab — Hammock, Sung Hee Hwang and Debin Wan — and five from Baylor — Zheng, Anamitra Ghosh, Michele Comerota, Fading Chen, Nicholas Propson — identified a lipid metabolic pathway regulating neuroinflammation. Further development of sEH inhibitors may lead to a potential treatment for AD, they said.

In their abstract, the scientists explained that epoxy fatty acids “are derivatives of the arachidonic acid and omega-3 fatty acid metabolism pathways and have anti-inflammatory activities. However, their beneficial efficacy is limited because of their rapid hydrolysis by the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH).”

Zheng, director and professor of Baylor’s Huffington Center on Aging, also holds joint appointments with Baylor’s department of molecular and cellular biology and the department of molecular and human genetics. Her laboratory focuses on basic and translational research on Alzheimer’s disease.

“Our expertise is mouse genetics, and we are known for using sophisticated mouse models and innovative approaches to probe the biology and pathophysiology of AD,” she wrote on her website.

Hammock added: “We have been lucky to collaborate with the scientists from Baylor and others around the world to find ways to resolve inflammation and reduce chronic diseases of aging. One of our sEH inhibitors is in human safety trials on a clinical path to treat chronic pain, we are hopeful that the compound also can be repurposed to ameliorate symptoms of diseases in the central nervous system.”

Study explains how a chemical from Japanese cornel may help treat Alzheimer’s disease

( Natural News ) Cornus officinalis , also known as Japanese cornel, is a medicinal plant native to China, Japan and South Korea. Well-known in traditional medicine, the fruit of this small tree, in particular, is used for its analgesic, diuretic and anti-diabetic properties . According to studies, the active components of Japanese cornel can inhibit the activity of a -glucosidase, the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates into glucose; enhances insulin secretion; and protects pancreatic beta cells — the cells responsible for producing insulin — from damage caused by inflammation.

But that’s not all Japanese cornel can do. In a recent study, Chinese researchers reported that the plant also shows promise as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, a compound called iridoid glycoside isolated from Japanese cornel showed neuroprotective effects , as well as the ability to reduce the accumulation of tau aggregates, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s.

To investigate the mechanisms behind the effects of Japanese cornel iridoid glycoside (CIG) on tau oligomers and cognitive function, the researchers injected wortmannin (WM) and GF-109203X (GFX) into the two largest ventricles of the brains of rats to induce tau oligomer formation and impair their memory. WM is an inhibitor of PI3K, an enzyme involved in synaptic plasticity , while GFX is an inhibitor of protein kinase C, an enzyme involved in learning and memory .

The researchers found that memory-impaired rats given either 60 or 120 mg/kg body weight CIG daily for 14 days performed much better in the Morris water maze test than untreated rats. CIG also restored the expression of synaptic proteins , such as presynaptic p-synapsin, synaptophysin and postsynaptic density-95 (PSD-95), whose levels have been reduced in the brains of rats by WM/GFX treatment.

In addition, CIG reduced the accumulation of tau oligomers in the animals’ brains, as well as in cells transfected with glycogen synthase kinase-3 B (wtGSK-3 B ). The activation of this enzyme is believed to be responsible for the memory deficits associated with old age as well as Alzheimer’s disease. CIG also increased the levels of autophagy-related genes (ATG7, ATG12, Beclin-1 and LC3II), suggesting that CIG can restore autophagy function.

Autophagy is the natural process by which cells get rid of unnecessary or damaged components . Multiple studies suggest that impairment of the autophagy process occurs in early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
