Dogs that exercise need to consume more antioxidants for optimum health, but which diet formulations are the best?

( Natural News ) Dogs are generally active creatures, which means their energy and strength get easily depleted. Good thing researchers found that additional antioxidants on dog diets can help them fight free radicals and avoid too much oxidative stress. To find out whether consuming more antioxidants has a positive effect on dogs, a team of researchers from the University of Illinois , visited American Foxhounds, a kennel located in Alabama, U.S. They took blood samples of the dogs to check the oxidative stress markers and other blood metabolites. The dogs were then divided into two groups where one was provided with a high-performance commercial diet while the other was given a test diet combined with additional antioxidants – vitamins C and E, and lutein – zinc, and taurine. The experiment was done in seven months; the animals were sent into a two- to five-hour hunting trips two or three times a week. One of the study authors, Kelly Swanson, said, “We think of it as unstructured endurance exercise. They’re not running the entire time. They might stop to sniff or go more slowly to pick up a scent.” Following the study, Swanson and the team found that there is a lower concentration of oxidative stress among dogs who were given the test diet. Moreover, they showed improvement in their performances compared to the group fed with a commercial diet. “It turns out, performance wasn’t affected by diet, but the test diet did improve indirect measures of oxidative stress. Therefore, improved performance may be expected with more strenuous exercise when metabolic demands are higher,” she added. Terminator REBOOTING: Smart microchip can self-start and operate even when the battery runs out

( Natural News ) Singaporean scientists have unveiled a smart microchip that will keep running long after its battery runs empty. The new BATLESS has an integrated solar cell that can get power from dim lighting, and its power management features let it start and run itself, an article in Science Daily states . The new chip will be installed on Internet of Things (IoT) sensor nodes. Because it needs far less power, it can run on much smaller batteries. Smart devices that will use the chip can be made many times cheaper and smaller. BATLESS is the brainchild of an engineering team from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Their leader, Massimo Alioto, said that the power-efficient microchip is a significant step towards battery-indifferent IoT sensor nodes. IoT devices need to run for long periods of time on limited power. They therefore need to be very efficient. The battery in a typical smart device are much bigger than the lone microchip they power. A battery can also cost thrice as much as the chip. The size of the battery depends on the operational life of the sensor node. The node’s lifespan also determines how often the battery needs to be replaced. Most IoT devices constantly use battery power. Smaller batteries are replaced more often, while bigger batteries cost more and take up more space. (Related: SCARY: Computer experts show how easy it is to hack off-the-shelf smart devices like baby monitors and home security cameras .) New smart microchip can switch between power modes to keep running The BATLESS microchip takes a big step towards battery indifference , the ability to operate despite the lack of battery power. The chip has two modes of operation depending on the availability of power. Get more news like this without being […]

Clever solution: Crows are cleaning city streets – a Dutch startup is training them to pick up cigarette butts in exchange for treats

( Natural News ) A new Dutch startup called “Crowded Cities” is training crows to recognize and pick up cigarette butts in exchange for treats , effectively cleaning up the city streets and parks. The crows would drop the cigarette butts into a “Crowbar” device, which then scans the piece of litter to confirm that it is a cigarette butt. Once confirmed, the device gives the crow a food reward, reinforcing the behavior. The inception of the bizarre project was inspired by a fateful meeting of project founders—interaction designer Ruben van der Vleuten, and experiment designer Bob Spikman – with a man named Joshua Klein, who was teaching crows to collect coins. The Crowbar is the device developed by “Crowded Cities” designed to train crows to pick up and deposit cigarette butts. A crow drops a cigarette filter onto the device’s funnel, where a camera scans it. After the camera recognizes the item as a filter, it releases a piece of food for the crow to pick up as a reward. The crow then flies off to find more cigarette butts and recruit more crows to participate. About 4.5 trillion cigarettes are littered each year around the globe. Discarded cigarette butts are a form of non-biodegradable litter, according to a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health . During rainfall, these litter are carried off from the streets to the drains, rivers, and the oceans. Aquatic life then come across these trash and mistake the highly toxic matter for food. There have also been instances of children swallowing them. Get more news like this without being censored : Get the Natural News app for your mobile devices. BOTOX injections found to actually NUMB your mind and stifle emotions

BOTOX injections found to actually NUMB your mind and stifle emotions

( Natural News ) Botox injections are all the rage these days; the pressure to remain “forever young” has only been heightened by the rise of social media – and people are getting age-defying procedures done at younger and younger ages. While you may think of Botox as being for those of us approaching middle age, doctors are now pushing something called “preventative Botox” on young twenty- and thirty-somethings , all in the name of preventing those pesky wrinkles. Scare tactics from experts include suggesting that the earlier millennials start treating their non-existent wrinkles, the “better” their “results” will be long-term. But new research has shown that your face isn’t the only thing numbed by Botox injections – it can have a lasting impact on your cognitive abilities and emotional state. While many people will undoubtedly still continue to get Botox injections in spite of the risks, the question remains: Is it really worth it? Is Botox altering your mind along with your face? Botox is clearly designed to change your face – and as such, many people are aware that the injections can have adverse effects on their skin. The “frozen face” effect is probably what people seeking Botox worry about most, but it turns out your skin isn’t the only organ that can experience consequences from the popular neuromodulator. As Green Med Info reports, multiple studies have shown that the effects of Botox can be systemic , reaching far beyond the face’s musculoskeletal and nervous systems. How to improve your memory, according to neuroscience

How to improve your memory, according to neuroscience

Why is it that you can perfectly recite the words to *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye,” but can’t remember the title of the new TV show you started watching on Netflix and wanted to tell your coworker about? We remember things because they either stand out, they relate to and can easily be integrated in our existing knowledge base, or it’s something we retrieve, recount or use repeatedly over time, explains Sean Kang, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Education at Dartmouth College, whose research focuses on the cognitive psychology of learning and memory. “The average layperson trying to learn nuclear physics for the first time, for example, will probably find it very difficult to retain that information." That’s because he or she likely doesn’t have existing knowledge in their brain to connect that new information to. And on a molecular level neuroscientists suspect that there’s actually a physical process that needs to be completed to form a memory — and us not remembering something is a result of that not happening, explains Blake Richards, DPhil , assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. In the same way that when you store a grocery list on a piece of paper, you are making a physical change to that paper by writing words down, or when you store a file on a computer, you’re making a physical change somewhere in the magnetization of some part of your hard drive — a physical change happens in your brain when you store a memory or new information. “So the ultimate question, at the cellular level, as to whether or not a memory gets stored [in the brain] is does that process actually complete properly,” he explains. “Do all of the molecular signals […]

Walnuts boost your health by increasing the number of good bacteria in your gut

Walnuts boost your health by increasing the number of good bacteria in your gut

( Natural News ) If you find walnuts tasty, you’re not alone. The bacteria in your gut do, too, according to new research. The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition , discussed the prebiotic nature of walnuts and how the nuts aid in keeping your stomach – and you – healthy. The researchers found that incorporating walnuts into your diet can have a variety of positive effects on your body, including reduced inflammation and lower cholesterol levels. They also discovered that regular nut consumption can have an impact on your microbiome, the microorganisms living in your gut and that this effect could be one of the driving forces behind walnuts’ many health benefits. In their study, the researchers divided 18 subjects – eight women and 10 men – into two groups. All participants submitted urine samples and had their body measurements, blood pressure, and fasting blood sugar taken. They were then put on a carefully controlled base diet. One group supplemented their daily meals with 42 grams of walnut halves and pieces, while the other group did not. This continued for three weeks and was followed by a week-long wash-out period. For another three weeks, the group that initially did not have walnuts ate nuts as part of their diet. The other group that originally had walnuts did not. The participants’ fecal and blood samples were then compared. The researchers noted changes in the population of bacteria inside the participants’ stomach. The researchers recorded a 49 percent to 160 percent increase in the population of Faecalibacterium , Dialister , Clostridium , and Roseburia in the walnut group compared to the control group. Star Wars hologram tech set to be 3D alternative to video conference calls

Star Wars hologram tech set to be 3D alternative to video conference calls

( Natural News ) A Canadian university has turned a beloved concept in science fiction – 3D holographic communication – into real technology. A CBC article details how researchers demonstrated a videoconferencing system that can create life-sized, three-dimensional holograms of people in distant locations as if they were in the same room. The technology is straight out of Star Wars, where fictional characters can talk to holograms of the other party on the opposite side of the galaxy. Called TeleHuman 2, it first debuted at an international conference in Montreal, Canada on April 2018. It is the pioneering work of Roel Vertegaal, a professor from Queen’s University . Vertegaal developed the holographic system as an answer to the limitations of current videoconferencing technology. Skype and other video calls are two-dimensional, which hinders the eye contact that makes conversations emphatic and personally involving. Furthermore, 2D video calls hamper other forms of non-verbal communication that people are unconsciously used to. The end result is that users do not feel like they are really conversing with another person. (Related: Laser holography kit that can fit in a backpack can project holograms into your brain .) New videoconferencing system creates true 3D holograms of faraway people This is where TeleHuman 2 comes in. The system is centered upon a cylinder as tall and wide as a human being. The surface of this pod is made from retro-reflective materials, which bounce light back to its source with minimal scattering. An arrangement of depth cameras takes remote 3D images of the target. The images are sent to a ring of “smart” light projectors fitted above and around the cylindrical pod. High-protein supplements may help you recover faster after a strenuous workout

High-protein supplements may help you recover faster after a strenuous workout

( Natural News ) To recover faster after a strenuous workout, take high-protein supplements as post-workout supplements. A study found that elite basketball players who took a high-protein post-workout supplement experienced faster recovery after exercise. A team of researchers from the University of Taipei in Taiwan and the Competitor Institute of Sports Nutrition in Beijing recruited 15 elite basketball players between 18 and 20 years old for the study. The participants completed a one-hour cycling test at 70 percent VO2 max. VO2 max, or maximal oxygen uptake, is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen that a person can use during intense or maximal exercise . Right after the cycling test, they were given either a carbohydrate-based drink formulated with high-protein or an isocaloric low-protein drink. They then rested for two hours before doing another cycling test at 80 percent VO2 max. The research team found that the participants who belonged to the high-protein group recovered faster after the cycling tests. In addition, their cycling time was 16 percent longer than that of the group which consumed a low-protein drink. Their consumption of the high-protein supplement resulted in improved cerebral oxygen saturation during the second cycling test and an increase in their blood oxygen levels. “It is mechanistically unclear how protein supplementation during post-exercise recovery acutely increased oxygen saturation during high-intensity exercise,” wrote the research team. “One possibility accounted for the increased oxygen saturation during exercise could be associated with better endothelial adaptation after more protein supplementation. An alternative possibility accounted for the hemodynamic adaptation after high-protein supplementation is an improved brain mitochondria function.” Get CLEAN FOOD and help support our mission to keep you informed : The Health Ranger Store lab verifies everything we sell with accredited testing for heavy metals, microbiology and food safety. Study: Teens should run a mile every day to prevent depression

Study: Teens should run a mile every day to prevent depression

( Natural News ) Teens aged between 15 and 19 were found to be more vulnerable to succumb to depression due to academic stress and social pressure. To combat this mental issue, experts suggest that teens run a mile daily to prevent depression. Research says, the lack of physical activity could possibly be the reason why more kids are having problems with mental health issues. This case is even more evident in secondary school as students become more sedentary. What started out as a simple initiative of primary school headteacher Elaine Wyllie in Scotland, the “daily mile” has now become a solution in more than 2,000 schools in the U.K. to address the issue of the kids’ lack of physical activity and depression. Essentially, kids either walked or jogged or ran for 15 minutes in addition to their P.E. class. The study showed that children who participated in the scheme appeared to be significantly healthier. Professor Mark Beauchamp of the British Columbia University noted how ideal the daily mile is since it does not require specialized exercise equipment and can be done at any given time. He also suggested trying the “Take 10!” scheme practiced in the U.S. wherein students do a combination of a 10-minute exercise and “walking meetings.” Moreover, a Harvard University study emphasized that while taking medications such as antidepressants is a common treatment among sufferers, exercise is also a good solution to treat depression. However, researchers clarified that severe cases of the condition may need more than just regular exercise. Memory strengthening TMR technique found to be more successful when accompanied with undisturbed sleep to promote memory consolidation

Memory strengthening TMR technique found to be more successful when accompanied with undisturbed sleep to promote memory consolidation

( Natural News ) Targeted memory reactivation (TMR), a procedure which presents learning-related cues during sleep, can better strengthen memory when it is accompanied with undisturbed sleep to encourage memory consolidation, according to a study in the journal Sleep Spindles & Cortical Up States . Previous studies have shown that an undisturbed short plastic period after cueing is needed for TMR to be effective. Therefore, researchers from Université libre de Bruxelles in Belgium looked at the effect of verbatim or interfering auditory presentation during wakefulness or non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and its impact on memory consolidation. The researchers recruited 96 participants for the study. The participants were tasked to study a list of 40 word pairs that were presented both visually and aurally. During a consolidation interval of 90 minutes spent either awake or asleep, the researchers provided the first word of 20 of the pairs aurally, succeeded by its correct (verbatim) or incorrect (interference) association. After that, they assessed memory for all pairs. Results revealed that the participants in the wake conditions showed improvement in their memory after verbatim cueing; however, their memory weakened after an incorrect association was presented, when compared with uncued word pairs. On the other hand, the targeted memory reactivation or sleep did not affect the memory consolidation of the participants in the nap conditions. Moreover, time-frequency assessments indicated that increased spindle-related sigma activity succeeds the presentation of the first word during NREM sleep. This indicated that the reactivation of the related memory content was instigated. On the other hand, the immediate presentation of the second word, either correct or incorrect, led to the elimination of sigma activity. These 7 bad habits could be the reason why you’re not getting enough sleep

These 7 bad habits could be the reason why you’re not getting enough sleep

( Natural News ) Like many people these days, your relationship with sleep may be complicated. It creeps in during the day when you actively avoid it but eludes you at night when all you want is a long, quality rest. Before your erratic sleep cycle has you thinking of health-related worst-case scenarios, know that your inability to sleep doesn’t automatically mean there’s something wrong with your body. You probably just need to cut back on certain bad habits . Not eating right – The phrase, “You are what you eat,” might feel worn-out, but it’s still true. The food you consume, especially before you sleep, will have an impact on the quality of your slumber. Avoid sweet and spicy items as these take time to digest, which will keep your body awake and may even cause indigestion or heartburn. Instead, choose food items that are rich in tryptophan , which helps in the production of the hormone melatonin that controls your sleep and wake cycle . These foods include dairy products, poultry, and tofu. You may also consume nutrients like magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B6 . These are found aplenty in various vegetables, as well as fish oil. Consuming caffeine or alcohol – Caffeine is essential to keeping you awake when you need to be productive during the day. However, having too much of it can affect your ability to sleep at night. To minimize its adverse effects, drink coffee only in the morning. With alcohol, moderation is always key. It has diuretic properties, so while taking a little may help, imbibing too much will have you getting up a lot during the night to go to the toilet. Google’s internal handbook instructs engineers to bury Natural News web pages from search results

Google’s internal handbook instructs engineers to bury Natural News web pages from search results

( Natural News ) Google should no longer be considered a search engine, a place where you can freely lookup information. Google does not truly honor your search terms and does not provide honest results from around the World Wide Web. According to the Google handbook , Google reserves the right to de-list pages “that directly contradict well established scientific or medical consensus for queries seeking scientific or medical information, unless the query indicates the user is seeking an alternative viewpoint.” The institutions and industries that influence Google can now use the search engine to censor out any contrarian or dissenting information that would dishevel their business interests. For instance, articles explaining the truth about chemotherapy or the dangers of psychiatric medication can be buried in Google’s “search engine” because the information “contradicts well established medical consensus.” On page 108 of the search evaluator quality guidelines, Google gives a glimpse into the type of reference information they bury, including “Pages that directly contradict well-established historical facts (e.g., unsubstantiated conspiracy theories), unless the query clearly indicates the user is seeking an alternative viewpoint.” In this way, Google, its engineers and influencers can control what people know to be true about history. Any dissenting eyewitness accounts of a historical event can be considered “contradictory to well-established historical facts.” In other words, there is an official story on every event and we must all obey it, no questions asked. For these reasons, Google should be considered a manipulative propaganda machine. First, Google uses your search terms to learn more about you. The information that Google collects is used to target market information and products to their users. Second, Google manipulates what is presented to you (even in search results) to control the information that you read. This is akin to brainwashing. Any […]

All About Acetylcholine: Neurotransmitter for Memory and Focus

All About Acetylcholine: Neurotransmitter for Memory and Focus

A low level of acetylcholine has a uniquely negative impact on memory and focus. Learn the 3 most effective ways for you to increase acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is one of the most important and ubiquitous neurotransmitters. It’s been called the “memory molecule” for the critical role it plays in memory, learning, and attention. It was the first neurotransmitter discovered and is one of the most abundant in the nervous system. A typical sign of insufficient acetylcholine is what’s referred to as “senior moments.” But when the acetylcholine level is low, these memory lapses can occur at any age. If your memory and ability to focus aren’t as good as you’d like, you’ll want to learn more about this unique brain chemical. What Is Acetylcholine? Acetylcholine was the first molecule to be identified as a neurotransmitter, a chemical that neurons use to communicate with each other. Otto Loewi, the German scientist who first encountered acetylcholine originally called it “vagusstoff” or “vagus substance” because it was released by the body’s longest nerve, the vagus nerve . ( 1 ) Later, he won a Nobel Prize for his discovery. Neurotransmitters are generally categorized as either excitatory or inhibitory, but acetylcholine is unique in that is doesn’t fall neatly into either camp. It functions differently depending on its location and what type of receptors are available. ( 2 ) Acetylcholine doesn’t occur just in the brain and the nervous system, it’s distributed throughout the body. In muscles, for example, it has an excitatory effect, but in the heart, it’s inhibitory. Even though acetylcholine is critical for higher thought processes, it’s not unique to humans. It’s found in other animals, plants, and even in bacteria and fungi. There are two main kinds of acetylcholine receptors — nicotinic and muscarinic. They get their unusual names from […]

Does Garcinia cambogia really help obese people lose weight?

Does Garcinia cambogia really help obese people lose weight?

( Natural News ) Obesity and overweight are serious problems the world over, but a study in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine may have revealed an unlikely ally in garcinia cambogia, with results indicating that it can help in weight loss . The study, led by researchers from the University of Cordoba in Spain, looked at the effects of garcinia cambogia and glucomannan on a person’s weight. In particular, they studied how administering the two can help overweight or obese people lose weight. In the clinical trial, researchers recruited 214 people who were all noted to be overweight or obese. They were then provided with 500 mg of garcinia cambogia and glucomannan, which they took twice a day for a period of six months. Researchers also examined the weight, fat mass, visceral fat, basal metabolic rate, lipid profiles, and glucose blood profiles of the participants. These were taken before and after the trial periods for comparison. Researchers found that supplementing with garcinia cambogia and glucomannan reduced the fat mass, visceral fat, lipid profiles, and sugar blood profiles of the participants, as well as increased their basal metabolic rates. These changes resulted in weight loss among the participants. However, the effect was found to be weak in participants who carry genetic variations such as PLIN4, FTO, Trp64Arg – which researchers suggested future studies to examine these further. Participants also reported no adverse side effects after the tests. In conclusion, the findings revealed that garcinia cambogia and glucomannan were an effective and safe treatment to help overweight or obese people lose weight by reducing fat mass, visceral fat, lipid profiles, and sugar blood profiles while increasing basal metabolic rate. Pesticides making America STUPID: Agricultural chemicals found to lower the IQ of children

( Natural News ) If you’re expecting a baby or considering starting a family soon, you’ve probably been reading up on how to give your child the best start in life. You probably wouldn’t dream of lighting up a cigarette or getting drunk while you’re pregnant, but you could very well be doing something that can be quite harmful to your unborn child if you’re being exposed to pesticides . This isn’t a warning that only applies to farm workers; 33 million pounds of organophosphate pesticides were used in the U.S. in 2007 alone, putting countless people at risk. Three studies that examined children from very different backgrounds all reached the same conclusion: Prenatal exposure to these pesticides can have a significant long-term adverse effect on a child’s brain health, and it doesn’t matter if that exposure came from crops or cockroach control products. We’re not talking about a small difference, either; the exposure lowered children’s IQ by as many as seven points ! In the two studies that took place in New York, inner-city children aged 6 to 9 who had been born to mothers who were exposed to chlorpyrifos noted working memory decreases of 2.8 percent and IQ drops of 1.4 percent for every increment of exposure. This means the effect is linear; those who had higher levels of exposure experienced more negative effects on cognition. It’s a drop that can cause serious problems in math and reading. Another study, this one carried out in California, looked at 300 children who lived in Monterey County agricultural communities where organophosphates were sprayed on crops and wind drift made exposure even worse. Their mothers had been studied during pregnancy to assess the organophosphate metabolites in their systems to determine their exposure. Their offspring underwent tests during childhood that included […]

Take fish oil OR blueberry powder for better brain health

Take fish oil OR blueberry powder for better brain health

( Natural News ) Brain health is on everyone’s minds these days. Even if you haven’t had to deal with the heartbreak of dementia in your family yet, you’ve probably heard just how likely it is that you or someone you love will eventually be hit by it. It’s no surprise, then, that we are constantly being bombarded with news stories about what you can do to protect your brain. Two foods that come up time and time again are blueberries and fish oil , so should you consume both of these every day to avoid dementia? The answer, surprisingly, is no. In a new study, researchers from the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center set out to determine whether consuming both fish oil and blueberry supplements could cause significant improvements in terms of brain protection. Using a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, they looked at people aged 62 to 80 who had been experiencing mild cognitive decline as they aged. Those who had received a diagnosis of dementia or other types of cognitive impairment were not included. The participants were divided into groups that took fish oil and a blueberry placebo; a blueberry supplement and fish oil placebo; fish oil and blueberry supplements together; or a placebo. Those in the fish oil group took four capsules a day – two with breakfast and two with dinner – that contained 400 mg of EPA and 200 mg of DHA. Those in the fish oil placebo group were given corn oil capsules. Participants assigned to the blueberry group took a powder made of freeze-dried blueberries, while the placebo consisted of a proprietary mix from the same provider that was created to be as similar as possible but with a different nutrient profile. They took a dose that was roughly equal to […]
