Good for the heart: A look at Chinese holly

To measure the antioxidant activities of the Chinese holly root extract, they used 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging and MTT assay and immunoassay. They used a mouse model of myocardial ischemia to measure the cardioprotective effects of the Chinese holly root extract in vivo. Based on the results of the trials, the research team discovered eight compounds in the extract that exhibited free-radical scavenging activities. They also found that the Chinese holly root extract increased cell viability and prevented the death of cardiac muscle cells. In the mouse model of myocardial ischemia, the extract attenuated the changes in heart tissues caused by the condition. Based on the findings of the study, the research team concluded that the Chinese holly root extract contains antioxidant properties and can benefit the heart.
