Eden School Mural "Wild Night" at D&R Greenway’s Olivia Rainbow Gallery through May (Photo provided by Eden School) Princeton, N.J.— D&R Greenway Land Trust’s Olivia Rainbow Gallery Presents Artwork by the Eden Autism School through May 31. "Wild Night" features a perky mural fairly leaping from the walls. Autism students of all ages crafted this evocative, three-dimensional evocation of nocturnal creatures, out and about under the moon. Eyes of intent owls echo a rising moon; bats, fireflies and saucy skunks seek midnight nutrients. Each year, Eden students create inventive, intensely hued nature art for the Olivia Rainbow Gallery. The exhibition, a work-in-progress, began during April, to celebrate Autism Awareness Month. The works may be enjoyed through May in the Student Gallery of D&R Greenway’s Johnson Education Center, One Preservation Place, Princeton. Free. Gallery hours Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., closed holidays. 609-924-4646 www.drgreenway.org Eden staff is known for guiding and inspiring multi-level success with their participants. When the mural was completed, staff brought their young artists to hang it. Eden students particularly respond to bright colors, evoking young Olivia Kuenne, in whose memory this gallery was founded and is maintained. Her passion for nature and her own art skills live anew on this gallery’s walls through these young artists’ creativity. Laura Pollack, Communications Coordinator of the Eden School, reminds that "Eden Autism is a recognized leader in improving the lives of children and adults with autism spectrum disorder." Founded in 1975, Eden was "among the first providers to address the need of services across the lifespan – from the point of diagnosis through adulthood. Eden provides expertise in working with … the most challenging and complex behaviors." Rather than grades, Eden’s students of many ages belong to Classrooms, as in "Early", "Middle", "Early Childhood Classroom, and so forth. Eden’s mission […]

From Life Span to Health Span

From Life Span to Health Span

From left: Keynote speakers Bruce Yankner and Sharon Inouye discuss the science of healthy aging with HMS Dean George Q. Daley. The easel bears a portrait of symposium namesake Hollis Albright. Image: Gretchen Ertl In 1919, the average life expectancy for people born in the U.S. was about 56 years. Today, that has risen to almost 79 years. Older populations in particular are growing. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that 65-year-olds can expect to live another 19 years on average, five more than in 1950. As baby boomers age, the number of U.S. adults over 65 is expected to more than double by 2060, outnumbering children for the first time, according to the Population Reference Bureau. As progress on multiple fronts has made it possible for many people to live longer, interest has grown in how to age well: preserving physical and mental health to maximize quality of life in the elder years. “At medical school, we were told that our aim should be to help our patients die young as late as possible,” surgeon and Harvard Medical School alumna Tenley Albright quipped at the 2019 Hollis L. Albright, MD ’31 Symposium . During the forum, entitled “Healthy Longevity and the Science of Brain Health,” researchers highlighted a selection of projects that are uncovering fundamental mechanisms of both healthy aging and age-related conditions. Tenley and brother Nile Albright established the annual symposium in 2001 in honor of their father, an HMS surgeon who dedicated his life to patient care and student mentorship. Individual and societal challenges surrounding the aging brain and the aging U.S. demographic are “coming at us like a juggernaut,” said HMS Dean George Q. Daley, the Caroline Shields Walker Professor of Medicine, at the March 28 event in the School’s New Research Building. “Understanding […]

15 New, Fun and Mostly Healthy Snack Recommendations

15 New, Fun and Mostly Healthy Snack Recommendations

There is never a time of year when it does not pay to be eating with healthy habits in mind. However, healthy foods can also have a great taste to them. In turn, there is no shortage of interesting new food and beverage options that manage to be nutritious and delicious – and often fun, too. Here are 15 of my most recent food and drink discoveries that fall on the Kosher and Kosher-ish spectrum. Food: 1) OH SNAP! OH SNAP! is a line of tasty pickles and pickled veggies in convenient, single serve packaging. Its innovative pickling line includes four pickle varieties featuring best-selling Dilly Bites and Hottie Bites, complemented by whole pickle options Gone Dilly and Hottie. Also offered are four pickled veggies: Cool Beans, Carrot Cuties, Pretty Peas, and Hoppin’ Jalapeños. Packaged with no added brine, all eight OH SNAP! varieties are also gluten-free and fat free. I like it because they’re low-calorie and their saltiness keep me from eating chips. 2) Hippeas HIPPEAS is a line of delicious chickpea puffs that are organic, non-GMO, gluten-free and vegan, in addition to being baked (not fried). Per each one-ounce serving, they have four grams of (plant) protein, three grams of fiber and only 130 calories. The snacks come in delicious flavors such as Vegan White Cheddar, Bohemian Barbecue, Sriracha Sunrise, Pepper Power and Far Out Fajita. HIPPEAS also recently released a six-pack of Vegan White Cheddar, as available at select Stop & Shop and CVS stores. My favorite of the batch is White Cheddar, which has the appeal of a great cheese-doodle, only without the guilt. 3) From The Ground Up From The Ground Up makes cauliflower-based pretzels and crackers that have a serving of veggies in each one-ounce serving. These award-winning snacks are Non-GMO Project Verified, […]

Does bread make you dumb? Gluten found to restrict blood flow to the brain, according to new research

( Natural News ) There’s nothing quite like fresh pasta or bread and butter, but if you want to keep your brain at its best, it may be time to say “bye bye” to your beloved, glutinous carbohydrates. Decades of research shows that gluten can have an array of adverse effects on brain health, and new studies show that the protein actually inhibits blood flow to the brain. This is big news for anyone who struggles with brain fog after a gluten-heavy meal. Gluten is a protein found in a number of grains which gives food structure, texture and acts as a “glue” to hold everything together. Grains that contain gluten include wheat, barley, rye and triticale — but gluten can be found in many unexpected places. Gluten can be found in everything from snack foods to soups to processed meats. It’s well known that gluten can have negative effects in people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, but the finding that gluten can cause adverse health effects in non-sensitive people is quite shocking. Gluten on the brain Sayer Ji, founder of Green Med Info , reports that over 60 years worth of research has tied gluten consumption to the onset of schizophrenia. Back in 1954, Ji says, scientists found that following a gluten-free diet was an effective strategy for managing or fully resolving cases of schizophrenia. Since that time, much of the research on gluten’s brain effects has been focused on the relationship between gluten and the gut-brain axis. But, as Ji reports, there is a growing body of research which points to another possible cause: Gluten cuts off blood flow to the brain. 100% organic essential oil sets now available for your home and personal care, including Rosemary, Oregano, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Clary Sage and more, all […]

Exam season: these are the foods you should eat to get the best results, according to a Sunderland expert

Berries are one of the foods to go for Exam season is here – whether it’s GCSEs, A-Levels, a degree or vocation a qualification you’re studying for, it’s a nerve-wracking time with lots of pressure to perform. As well as the impending experience of the exams themselves, there’s a revision schedule to stick to, lack of sleep, and not enough time to eat. Dr Paul Innerd, University of Sunderland But one expert is warning students not to forget to feed their bodies as well as their minds this exam season – and make the most of the chance to give themselves and advantage in doing so. Dr Paul Innerd is a Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at the University of Sunderland. Here he gives his views on the best nutrition to help see young people and students through this tough period. Water Start with water. Make sure you get enough. You are roughly 70% water, so it’s important that you drink it. In fact, the brain is a mass of water, fat and some protein. Water allows brain functions to take place, such as thinking and memory. Berries Berries such as blueberries are packed with antioxidants which are great for overall health and alertness. Studies have found that berries are brain boosters and improve brain function, memory and focus. Pop some berries on your cereal to give your health a kick. Fatty fish Fats are essential for good health and brain power. Fatty fish such as salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly one called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). DHA forms a major building block of brain development in children. Nuts Make your peanut butter the natural sugar free variety and you’ll get the benefits of those essential fats. Nuts also contain protein which is the nutrient responsible […]

Better Sleep for a Better You

Better Sleep for a Better You

Better Sleep for a Better You We’ve all heard it before…In order to perform at an optimal level, we require 7-9 hours of sleep per 24 hour period. The science behind it – heart rate variability, brain function, cell regeneration, inflammation maintenance, memory enhancement, etc. – is just about bulletproof (I know there is that rare genetic breed that only require 4-6 hours per night, but odds are you aren’t one of them, so don’t try it). Now, how many of us actually are getting this? Even more importantly, how much of it is actually quality ? Anyone can lay down and let their brain run crazy for a few hours, in and out of sleep, lucid dreaming, and say they slept 8 hours. But how many of us are going through the REM cycles and deep sleep needed in order to optimize our body’s functionality? If you’re one of those people out there that this resonates with, stick with me, I’m about to give you a few tips (some more obvious than others) that can help you get to sleep faster, sleep more, and to improve your quality of sleep. So, here we go… #1 – Go to bed sooner. Ok this one is obvious, right? The sooner you get to sleep, the more sleep you’re bound to get throughout the night (duh). But on a serious note, it is something that needs to be addressed. How many of you find yourself mindlessly wandering through social media or fixed to a TV screen at night, or even reading into the late hours? Television and social media, especially, are notorious for increasing dopamine levels within the brain, which in turn keeps you feeling up and awake! All of these things are contributing to keeping your mind up and running […]

The Hidden Danger Of Carbonated Drinks

The Hidden Danger Of Carbonated Drinks

When one thinks of the many vices a person can have, drinking lots of fizzy drinks can seem like an insignificant one. Carbonated drinks are affordable for everyone, widely available and can give you a boost just like coffee! It can’t be worse than cigarettes or drugs, right? Actually, carbonated can be quite harmful for your body and your mind. The best thing you can do is to completely eliminate these drinks from your diet and replace them with healthy drinks. Why are these drinks harmful? Who would eat eight tablespoons of sugar in one go? Probably nobody! But when drinking a carbonated drink this is exactly what happens, since a single can of Coca Cola contains 39 grams of sugar. According to the American Heart Association, the recommended daily allowance of sugar is just six tablespoons for women and nine for men. It is therefore clear that carbonated drinks contain much more sugar than we should be taking in! Sugar is responsible for intestinal permeability, because it allows some substances to move from the intestine to the blood, triggering diseases such as obesity and other metabolic disorders. In addition, sugar nourishes the bad bacteria and fungi of the intestine. If you take in too many added sugars, such as those found in carbonated drinks and other products, the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and certain types of cancer also increases. We have not even mentioned the problems that sugar causes for teeth: carbonated drinks contain not only sugars but also acids; these acids (and those created by the bacteria that live in sugar) erode tooth enamel and increase the risk of plaque. Excessive intake of carbonated drinks has also been linked to memory loss and even a shrunken hippocampus, which is the part of the brain responsible for […]

They can also supposedly enhance alertness and help with stress management. The wellness industry’s latest obsession isn’t a soothing, crystal-infused facial or a calming CBD gummy — but actually quite the opposite: Meet nootropics, a somewhat vaguely defined category of supplements created to increase cognitive function, boost energy, enhance alertness and help manage stress. During a time when most of us are always plugged in and logged on, when the notion of work/life balance is especially elusive and when the " cult of busyness " seems ever-present, the appeal of these energizing, mind-sharpening products is obvious. "Nootropics are supplements which enhance your brain’s performance output and have the potential to improve memory, focus and in turn, productivity," says Jules Miller, the founder of The Nue Co. , a supplement brand which recently launched Nootro-Focus , its own nootropic supplement. Unknowingly, plenty of people already rely on the most common, well-researched substances that fall into the category of nootropics on a daily basis — a morning cup of coffee, for example. "Currently the only scientifically proven nootropics are caffeine, nicotine, amphetamine (Adderall), methylphenidate (Ritalin) and eurogenics (wakefulness promoting drugs used for narcolepsy)," explains nutritionist Gabriela Peacock . Those substances may not seem exactly in line with the natural-obsessed wellness industry, and that’s where the latest crop of alternatives to them — from brands like Plant People, Sakara and Goop — comes in. The new nootropics are, for many in the wellness realm, more appealing than chugging coffee or taking stimulants, which Peacock notes, "are fast-acting, but as we all know, can also come with side effects." They rely on herbs like schisandra, eleuthero and goji berriesbacopa, rhodiola, L-theanine and lion’s mane — many of which are also sometimes referred to as adaptogens. Many have asked the question, what exactly is a limitless pill? For those of you who have not seen the movie “Limitless,” (we recommend watching it) the lead actor Bradley Cooper develops abilities which are superhuman whenever he consumes the synthetic “smart drug” called NZT-48. His IQ increases to a staggering four-digit number, his cognitive abilities are improved to inhuman heights, and he displays increases in ambition and drive. The power of his brain increases so rapidly that he becomes fluent in any languages just by listening to others speak in said languages. He is also able to remember all his experiences from the past, easily recollecting all of his early childhood memories, and makes enormous profits outperforming the stock market. However this pill unfortunately also had its associated adverse side effects. Using this smart drug caused the character to blackout for several hours and sometimes days, and if he stopped using it, it could cause death. Many people would like to find out if the limitless pills are real. The limitless tablet which was called NZT-48 in the movie is only a fictional supplement which was created by the scriptwriters of Hollywood who wanted a unique storyline for promoting their film. In real life, there is no similar pill or drug available for sale at pharmacies or elsewhere which could enhance the user’s performance to that extent. While many vendors claim to sell similar miracle drugs online, internet users should be aware that these […]

The endocannabinoid system: what is it?

The endocannabinoid system: what is it?

Your body is a lot like a symphony—or the chorus of a Mumford & Sons song. It likes to be in harmony. This inner harmony is called “homeostasis,” and the master conductor that keeps everything balanced is your endocannabinoid system. The endo-what? The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a bona fide body system right up there with the digestive, cardiovascular and reproductive systems. “The ECS is an immensely important physiological system that orchestrates much of the communication within and between organs to help maintain health, well-being and balance,” says Carl Germano, RD, CNS, author of Road to Ananda: Simple Guide to the Endocannabinoid System, Hemp Phytocannabinoids/CBD and Your Health . While “regulator of internal balance” sounds nice, the ECS has practical downstream effects on things that are much more concrete. “The ECS governs neurotransmission involved in the regulation of mood, memory, reward, appetite, anxiety, stress and more,” says Germano. And that’s just the beginning—Germano says the ECS also plays a key role in everything from pain signaling to bone building. Yet the ECS was discovered only in 1992. It took so long to find because this new system’s framework is tiny. It’s seen only microscopically on cell membranes—the skin of cells. Here there are receptors, which act as keyholes. Potential keys can be anything from nutrients to viruses. When keys fit into keyholes, the door to the cell is opened and things happen. “Receptors are waiting for a message from outside the cell,” says Alex Capano, DNP, a faculty member and senior fellow at the Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. “Then they translate and communicate that message to inside the cell, [which] then influences activity.” Unlocking the system The ECS is a sprawling network of specific receptors on cells […]

Take a walk, but just for a bit: Research shows that it helps with creativity, problem-solving

( Natural News ) Whenever you go on a short walk before working on a tough problem, you use the same creativity-boosting technique Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, and other geniuses used during their heyday. A recent study showed that walking plays an important role in getting the creative juices flowing and coming up with impressive solutions to problems. Researchers from Stanford University noted that many geniuses in human history made it a habit to walk before tackling difficult problems. Some of them, like Einstein and Jobs, even worked on their problems during their walks. As part of their experiment, researchers asked some participants to either sit down or walk on a treadmill while facing a blank wall indoors. Meanwhile, they asked another set of participants to go outdoors. Some of them went for walks while the rest sat in wheelchairs and were pushed along the same route. The researchers evaluated the creative output of the participants by testing their divergent thinking – that is, their ability to come up with creative approaches by exploring different possible solutions. The researchers reported that walking increased the creative output of participants. Those who walked experienced a 60 percent increase in creative output compared with people who spent their time sitting. (Related: If you want to spur those creative juices then spend MORE time by yourself: Study .) Taking short walks is the creativity-boosting technique of geniuses Einstein and company liked to take long walks every day. Some of them spent hours walking outdoors. But the researchers from Stanford found that a person doesn’t need to go on a long walk to increase his or her creativity. Walking for a short period of time – anywhere between five to 16 minutes – was enough to raise the creative output of the participants in […]

How to spot a liar – even if he isn’t a cabinet minister

To be perfectly honest, this seems to be a prime time for lies, mistruths and pants on fire. We have to navigate fake news constantly, while dodging conspiracy theorists, antivaxxers and misleading anti-abortion activists on social media. Last week, the Washington Post calculated that Donald Trump had told his 10,000th lie while in office. Theresa May, meanwhile, clearly didn’t believe former defence secretary Gavin Williamson’s protestations that he wasn’t responsible for the National Security Council leak, hence Williamson’s extreme step of swearing on his children’s lives that he wasn’t guilty. And what about the rest of us? How many of our #livingmybestlife Instagram posts are, to put it charitably, putting a positive spin on things? Are we living in an age where lies are acceptable? Robert Feldman, professor in the department of psychological and brain sciences at the University of Massachusetts and author of The Liar in Your Life, says he thinks we are. “I do feel that it’s become more acceptable to lie. Presidents – even ones you don’t like – are role models, and if you see someone with high prestige who constantly lies and gets away with it, as seems to be the case, it’s providing a model of what’s acceptable. I used to talk about Bill Clinton as the president who made lying acceptable and yet what happened was, he got away with it.” Not only that, he says, but, despite his denials of his affair with Monica Lewinsky, Clinton is still regarded with respect and even affection. “That’s a pretty powerful message that you can lie and still be accepted by society. Now, I think we have an even greater example in the White House of a leader who lies constantly. These are absolute falsehoods and yet here he is. This is probably something […]

How mental illness is a global issue, not just limited to the U.S and how to fix the issue

How mental illness is a global issue, not just limited to the U.S and how to fix the issue

Mental illnesses have been a leading global cause of death and disability for long. Approximately 30-60% of patients who seek medical help do so due to complaints resulting from emotional disorders. Besides, mental illness can lead to several problems in a person life and even in the lives of the people around them. Furthermore, it leads to the inability to fit in the ordinary life of others hence making the infected person isolated and depressed. However, people suffering from this condition require proper care and support. Some ways to fix mental illnesses are: Natural treatments: Eating is a significant way of becoming toxic; therefore, the best way to get rid of these toxins is through consuming nutrient-dense foods. Additionally, exercises are ideal for speeding up the detoxification process. Therefore nutrition is the primary natural treatment for mental illness. Some foods to fix mental illnesses are: Vegetables- Vegetables for instance spinach are rich in magnesium which is vital in relaxing the mind and body. Spinach is also rich in vitamin C, antihypertensive nutrients and also contains lots of iron and folic acid. Lack of enough folic acid in the body can lead to mental illness; this, therefore, leads to forgetfulness and low self-esteem. Fruits – Fruits like bananas can reduce anxiety since they contain alkaloids that boost spirit and confidence. Also bananas contain tryptophan and vitamin B6 which helps the brain to make serotonin and reduce stress. The lack of serotonin in the brain leads to mental illnesses, madness or depression. Therefore, eating bananas in moderation is advantageous to the tranquility of the mind. Eggs- Eggs are rich in chlorine a form of the vitamin B complex that aids to boost the memory and focus more. Medication and Supplements: Medications are best for patients who are severely affected due to […]

Combining marijuana and opioids may help treat pain, without the risk of addiction

Combining marijuana and opioids may help treat pain, without the risk of addiction

In an ideal world, patients in need of pain relief would take pain medication without the inherent fear of possible opioid addiction. According to a recent study, combining cannabinoids (the active component of the marijuana plant) with morphine could offer a safe way to decrease opioid dosage among those suffering from pain, thereby reducing their risk of becoming addicted to opioids. Finding a way to decrease dosage is key; opioid addiction often begins when patients build a tolerance to prescription pain medications. Over time, a higher and higher dose of the drug is required to feel sufficient pain relief. Although prior research has shown that combining cannabinoids with opioids may enhance pain-relieving effects of opioids, both drugs individually are known to slightly impair cognition, leading to a concern that if taken together negative cognitive effects, such as behavioral and memory deficits, would be amplified. However, recent research suggests that this is not the case; cannabinoids and opioids together do not impair cognition. In an animal study, researchers reported that combining cannabis and morphine did not increase the risk of impulsivity nor impair memory. In the study, scientists gave monkeys moderate doses of morphine and CP55940, a synthetic drug that mimics the activity of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a natural chemical found in the marijuana plant responsible for the drug’s psychoactive effects. After administering both drugs, monkeys were tested on measures of memory and impulsivity using touchscreens and treats. Results showed that each drug hindered performance, but both drugs combined had a lower effect on performance compared to each drug alone. "The current opioid epidemic underscores the need for safe and effective pharmacotherapies for treating pain," said Vanessa Minervini, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, who presented the research at the American Society […]
