Food for thought – 5 brain boosting snacks for students

Oily fish – like salmon – can help those little grey cells With exam season approaching, students have been urged to swap a diet of quick, cheap eats for nutritious meals to boost brain power when hitting the books. Health and fitness experts at Vivotion.com have compiled a guide to support learners in maximising revision potential this summer. Little sleep, stress and missing meals will create chaos when it comes to the ability to concentrate and absorb information. Low supply of both money and time has resulted in many opting for short-term fixes such as takeaways and sugary snacks in replacement of healthy and fulfilling meals. However, junk food in place of normal meals can be damaging to long-term health, so relying on these foods to retain high energy levels could be doing more harm than good. A spokesperson for Vivotion.com explained: “A healthy diet is always important, however in times which require higher levels of concentration and a lot of brain power a nutritious diet is vital. “Endurance is critical, so going for foods which provide a short burst of energy will often leave you feeling unfulfilled and sluggish later on in the day. “Students can improve their learning by simply swapping out crisps for dried fruits which can make all the difference in the world – after all, one mark could be the difference of a whole grade.” Here is Vivotion.com’s guide to successful exam-time snacking: 1. Oily fish One of the most effective essential fatty acids (EFA) is omega 3 which occurs naturally in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines which are all relatively cheap. Diet and language: Type 2 diabetes linked to decline in speech skills among the elderly, says study

( Natural News ) If you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, you need to follow a nutritious and healthy diet since the condition affects your blood glucose levels. But diabetes doesn’t just affect your blood sugar. According to a study, Type 2 diabetes can also affect verbal fluency , especially among older patients. The study was published in the journal Diabetologia . Diabetes and brain function According to the Australian researchers who conducted it, Type 2 diabetes may affect brain function earlier than experts first thought. They set out to examine how dementia affects brain health. Diabetes is linked to greater risks of dementia , but data suggest that the risk could be minimized by following a healthy lifestyle and maintaining healthy blood glucose levels. (Related: Study: Diet determines whether you get type 2 diabetes, especially in older women .) The researchers worked with 705 volunteers to complete a trial that lasted for four-and-a-half years. None of the participants had dementia, but 348 of them were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. The participants with diabetes had an average age of 68. Meanwhile, the participants who did not have the condition had an average age of 72. For the duration of the trial, all of the volunteers underwent brain scans that determined the presence of tissue shrinkage, also called brain atrophy. The participants also took part in cognitive tests that gauged their verbal skills. The researchers found that participants with diabetes already displayed evidence of smaller brain volume at the beginning of the trial. This implied that changes to the brain begin occurring much earlier than first thought in patients with diabetes. The researchers added that no additional brain shrinkage was observed through the course of the study. 100% organic essential oil sets now available for your home and […]

Entertained and sedentary: Children have a higher risk of becoming OBESE if they have a TV in their bedroom

( Natural News ) It seems harmless to let your kids have a TV in their bedroom, but researchers warn that this privilege may actually be bad for them. According to a study, children younger than six who can watch films in their own space are more likely to be overweight . The study, which was published in the journal Science & Sports , was conducted by researchers from the University of Porto . However, the researchers did not look into the impact of having TVs in bedrooms on the health of young boys. TV time and childhood obesity Data from the study suggest that four-year-old girls have a greater risk of becoming obese if they are allowed to have a television in their bedroom. For the study, Dr. Jorge Mota and his fellow researchers examined the lifestyles and habits of 120 girls aged four to six. They also talked to the kids’ parents. Their findings suggest that the girls with TVs in their bedrooms were at least thrice as likely to be overweight compared with the other girls who were without the same luxury. After they were questioned, at least two-thirds of the parents admitted that their children had a TV in their bedroom when they were as young as six. The researchers also found that the amount of time children spend watching TV only increases as they get older. They warned that, if left unresolved, unrestricted TV time could cause serious health problems in young children. Additionally, having their own TVs means kids will spend less time on other activities like playing outside or taking part in physical activities. (Related: Experts warn that kids who watch TV see more ads for junk food, consuming on average 500 more snacks per year than kids who don’t .) The […]

Sleep & fitness: resting for results

Sleep & fitness: resting for results

Getting enough sleep can be the difference between your current physique and the figure of your dreams. Though diet and exercise can steal the spotlight, sleep plays a vital role in any physical transformation. Giving your body adequate rest not only keeps you energized throughout the day, but makes muscle growth and fat loss that much more possible. You may think you can survive on 5 or 6 hours a night, but experts say it’s not nearly enough. One beneficial aspect of sleep is production of human growth hormones. These hormones are formed in your pituitary gland and are responsible for body processes like cellular repair, and the balance of overall body composition, according to Healthline. It’s released into your system with little pulses around midnight and into the early morning. Inadequate sleep keeps these hormones from being produced efficiently. While high levels of human growth hormone in the body can boost muscle growth and help you recover from injury, low levels can make you gain fat and compromise your immune system. Protein synthesis also happens while you sleep, especially when you eat a protein-rich meal before bed. Protein synthesis means your body is using amino acids found in protein to build new muscle, according to BodyBuilding.com. Protein synthesis is also maximized when you sleep because your energy expenditure is reduced. If you are trying to build muscle, it’s all about size. Size means holding on to those extra calories so they go to all the right places. Your body is constantly burning up your food while your awake, keeping you energized and alert as you tackle the day. As soon as your asleep, your energy expenditure drops and your body can focus on conservation instead of consumption, allowing you to grow. If you don’t eat a solid meal […]

The latest in technology – and health dangers – coming to a city near you: 5G is on the way

( Natural News ) Don’t get caught up in the hype when your phone company starts promoting its upcoming 5G service. Is it cutting-edge technology? Yes. Is it faster than previous iterations? Certainly. Will they make a lot of money from it? Absolutely. But is it safe? Many experts believe the answer to that question is a firm “NO.” The new 5G system uses microwave frequencies that are in the 1mm wavelength. Such millimeter waves operate at a higher frequency and are readily absorbed by buildings, foliage and your body . The long-term effects that such short microwaves can have on your health have not yet been tested. Instead, the FCC and telecommunication firms are working on the assumption they are safe based on some research from 1996. Unfortunately, researchers have since learned that our existing cellular systems for 3G and 4G are having a significant negative impact on health. Peer-reviewed scientific studies have associated wireless cell phone radiation and 2G, 3G, and 4G systems with problems like impaired fertility, cognitive issues, and brain cancer. For example, a recent $25 million study that was carried out by the National Institutes of Health linked 2G and 3G radiation from cell phones to a rise in tumors of the heart and brain, along with a statistically significant rise in heart muscle damage. Some researchers have also uncovered a link between wireless radiation and antibiotic resistance. Swiss researchers have found that electromagnetic fields from wireless networks and cell phones can cause attention deficit disorder, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, insomnia, and health arrhythmias. If 4G is bad for you and 5G will be as much as 100 times faster, it’s pretty easy to connect the dots here. This Common Food Keeps Your Brain Healthy

This Common Food Keeps Your Brain Healthy

The more people ate, the better their thinking skills over time. Eating two teaspoons of nuts each day is linked to better memory, thinking and reasoning, new research reveals. Those eating a small amount of nuts regularly had 60 percent better cognitive skills than those not eating them, the study found. Nuts contain antioxidants that can help to reduce inflammation, which protects the brain against cognitive decline. The conclusions come from a study that tracked 4,822 people over 55-years-old in China from 1991 to 2006. All were given tests of cognitive function, including memory, thinking and reasoning. The results revealed that 10 grams of nuts per day or higher was linked to a 40 percent reduction in the risk of cognitive decline. The more nuts people ate, the better their thinking skills over time. Dr Ming Li, the study’s author, said: “By eating more than 10 grams (or two teaspoons) of nuts per day older people could improve their cognitive function by up to 60 per cent — compared to those not eating nuts — effectively warding off what would normally be experienced as a natural two-year cognition decline.” The nut most people ate in the study was peanuts — 17 percent were regular consumers of them. Dr Li said: “Nuts are known to be high in healthy fats, protein and fibre with nutritional properties that can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health. While there is no cure for age-related cognitive decline and neurogenerative disease, variations in what people eat are delivering improvements for older people.” Aging populations around the world can change their diet to slow down natural decline, Dr Li said: “As people age, they naturally experience changes to conceptual reasoning, memory, and processing speed. This is all part of the normal ageing process. But age is […]

Can eating a banana help you sleep better?

Can eating a banana help you sleep better?

( Natural News ) Many people find it hard to have a good night’s sleep because of various factors, such as stress and busyness. And while taking sleeping pills may be a tempting solution to this, these come with unwanted side effects. Fortunately, there are safer and more natural ways to sleep better at night. One of these is eating bananas before bed . How so? The sleep-enhancing powers of the yellow tropical fruit are discussed below: Bananas help control your sleep patterns: Bananas contain an essential amino acid called tryptophan , which helps the body produce serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that helps regulate the functions of the body. It is deemed as one of the most important chemicals in the brain and plays a role in treating anxiety, insomnia, and other mood problems, such as agitation, aggression, anger, fatigue, and irritability. It also plays a role in regulating body temperature and sleep. Bananas help soothe the mind: In addition to serotonin, tryptophan also helps produce melatonin, which is responsible for regulating circadian rhythms or the sleep-wake cycle. The hormone works together with serotonin to control sleeping patterns, body temperature, and hormone release. It also helps treat anxiety and improves sleep. In a study published in the Journal of Pineal Research , researchers associated eating bananas with an increase in melatonin levels in the body. Bananas promote relaxation in the body: Lacking magnesium in your diet can cause night cramps, which can disturb your sleep and keep you awake at night. Bananas help prevent night cramps because they contain magnesium. One banana offers 8 percent of the recommended daily intake of magnesium. The mineral influences some of the processes in the body that promote sleep. Magnesium also regulates neurotransmitters and melatonin, calming the mind and body for better […]

Benefits of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE)

It’s time to bring garlic from the kitchen to the medicine cabinet. Known as Allium sativum in scientific circles, garlic is considered one of the best disease-preventing foods because of its potent and widespread effects. For more than 5,000 years dating back to ancient Egypt garlic has been used in medicine. Other ancient cultures, including the Greeks, Romans, and Chinese, have used garlic as well. As part of the Allium species, garlic is closely related to onions, shallots, and leeks. It’s a good source of manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, selenium, and fiber. Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) has been the subject of more than 700 medical studies assessing its various aspects, including garlic?s benefits for cardiovascular health, immunity support, and even cognition. AGE is slightly different than the garlic clove used for cooking. Similar to other garlic forms (powder, oil, or extract), AGE must be processed before it can be used as a supplement. Raw, sliced garlic is submerged in ethanol and stored for 20 months. This process naturally stabilizes the sulfur compounds found in garlic, making it easier to digest and increasing its antioxidant content. The aging process also helps remove many of the irritants, oxidants, and odorous components from raw garlic. As a supplement, AGE can deliver a more uniform dose of garlic at a higher concentration than eating raw garlic cloves, and a supplement possesses a high bioavailability rating?it is easily absorbed by the body, crossing into the bloodstream and organ tissues. Recent studies have shown that AGE contains powerful antioxidant compounds, such as carboxylic acid and L-arginine, which play important roles in combating oxidant-induced conditions that occur as the body ages. AGE provides critical nutrients used by the body to produce its own antioxidants for protecting itself from radiation, neutralizing chemicals, and clearing out toxins. […]

Natural Remedies: Raw Honey For Wounds, Cough, Others

People have used raw honey in traditional medicine for hundreds of years. This sweet, natural substance may contain healthful elements that processed honey does not have. Honey provides a range of health benefits. Raw honey, which comes straight from the beehive, contains healthful bee pollen, bee propolis, and plenty of antioxidants. Some Health Benefits Of Raw Honey Are: Wound healing Numerous studies have suggested that honey works well as a wound healing dressing. A review confirms that honey is useful in wound healing because of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Some evidence also suggests that honey has antiviral and antifungal properties. Also, honey is acidic, which helps release oxygen from the wound and promote healing. Apply raw honey directly to minor cuts and burns then place gauze or a bandage over the wound. Alternatively, people can purchase manuka honey products for wound care at some drug stores, or choose between brands online. Relieving coughs Several studies have suggested that honey may be as or more effective than some over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicines. Many cough medicines are not safe for younger children to take, so honey may be a good alternative for children over one year of age. A meta-analysis suggests that honey may provide an effective way to decrease the severity and frequency of a child’s nighttime cough. One small-scale study found that a milk and one type of honey mixture relieved children’s coughs as effectively as an OTC medicine. To relieve a cough, take a teaspoon of raw honey and avoid other liquids or foods afterward to allow the honey to coat the throat. Antioxidant effects Researchers believe that some of the main health benefits from honey come from its antioxidant content. The Rise of the Robot – how to supercharge your skills to outsmart AI

By Carol Gaskell , Managing Director of Full Potential Group According to recent global reports [i] the financial sector is one of the top ‘at risk’ professions threatened by advances in big data and machine learning. Accountants are being replaced by algorithms capable of analysing financial data and completing tax returns, computers are being used to make stock trades faster and even predict how the market will react, and even automated systems are under development to potentially replace high level bankers. Carol Gaskell But research [ii] by the McKinsey Global Institute has found that humans still have the edge over AI in many areas including skills prevalent in the finance sector such as pattern recognition and matching, logical reasoning, creativity and innovation, complex problem solving, emotional intelligence and negotiation skills. The key is knowing how to build and leverage that super human brain power that AI can’t replicate. This is where neuroscience can help by using certain techniques to improve your brain fitness. The healthier your brain, the more agile it becomes, making it easier to adapt to change and to learn new skills, creating future leaders that can out-think, out-create and out-perform the competition – in this case, AI. Are Neuroelectrical Therapies Beneficial?

Are Neuroelectrical Therapies Beneficial?

Node Smith, ND Brain stimulation with electrical current is becoming increasingly popular for treating a wide range of pathologies – depression, anxiety, developmental disorders and even Alzheimer’s disease . But a recent research study has put the effectiveness of these treatments into questions – specifically transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS). Scientist Raises Doubt on Benefit of Neuroelectrical Therapies From Kingston University, Dr. Giulia Galli, was part of a research team that investigated tDCS, which is a technique that involves administering a very weak (2 milliamp) electrical current to specific parts of the brain. Electrodes are attached to the head to deliver the current. “During the past 15 years, increasing numbers of people have started to use tDCS with a great deal of enthusiasm, claiming it can improve a range of neurological functions – including enhancing memory in Alzheimer’s patients and improving dyscalculia in children with developmental disorders,” Dr Galli said. “The technique is relatively cheap and easy to use compared to other brain stimulation techniques – specially-designed caps are even available for people to try it at home – and in almost every field of mental processes research contends that it works. Yet there are now real question marks over the evidence for those claims.” Researchers from Spain and Russia analyzed the studies Researchers from Spain and Russia also took part in the studies, which analyzed findings from all of the existing studies in order to determine the effectiveness of the technique on long term memory. Over the past five years there has been feedback on the relatively low number of participants involved in studies of tDCS, as well as design flaws of studies and publication bias. Positive results have seemed to be published more frequently. “The claim for many years has been that this technique is a like […]
