THIS PERFORMER NEEDS absolutely no introduction. The 60-year-old Italian is synonymous with powerful, melodious, almost ethereal singing both on stage and in his recordings. Tenor Andrea Bocelli’s appeal was once explained by Celine Dion thus: "If God would have a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea." He is often labelled the world’s greatest musical artist and you have a chance to witness the magic live at the du Arena, Yas Island, where he will be making his third appearance at the venue, this Friday evening. A mixture of material from the classics to tracks off his new album, Si, Bocelli spoke exclusively to City Times about his upcoming show. How does it feel when people label you the world’s best and most beloved tenor? Did you always believe you would reach this level of notoriety when you began singing? I don’t think that reflects reality: there are many extraordinarily talented singers in the world. Being appreciated is undeniably a reason for satisfaction, yet popularity in and of itself does not lead to anything, it is not a trait and it is always temporary: nothing is forever. Today you are famous, tomorrow you may not be. I think that God has lent me a tool that allows me to express what I feel. My only credit, if you can define it as such, lies in the fact that I have tried to honour this talent with discipline and perseverance. I am proud that I am able to offer my voice to anyone who seeks emotion in music and a relief from the struggles of everyday life. Reality has exceeded all my dreams, even my most daring one. Success arrived after many doors were closed in my face, sometimes in an ungracious manner. The opportunities to make it […]
Using the power of music to get better, both mentally and physically, and live well can pay rich dividends, writes Rashmi Ramesh A nine-year-old, who’d never uttered a word all his life, spoke for the first time during a music session. His first word was “open”. Diagnosed with autism, the boy had been non-verbal until then. The development came as a pleasant surprise to Purvaa Sampath—currently India’s only CBMT (Certification Board for Music Therapists)-certified music therapist and neurologic music therapistwho was an intern at the time. “With that boy, my supervisor and I had developed a song where he would knock on the drum when we prompted him to. I was leading the session and began the song. When I got to the part about knocking, the song went ‘Who’s that knocking on the door?’ and instead of just knocking on the drum, he looked straight at me and said the word ‘open’. That was the first time he’d ever said a word and it was a huge moment for me, my supervisor, his teacher as well as his family. And this word came after months of music therapy,” Sampath said. With music therapy, consistency, patience and practice are key, according to her. Akanksha Pandey, consultant clinical psychologist at Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru, said music is an expressive therapeutic tool that helps people improve their physical and mental health — it relaxes the mind and has a functional effect on the brain. “The therapeutic role of music has been recognised since ancient times, through texts such as Raga Chikitsa, and has the support of current research as well, which talks about the physiological benefits of music on the immune system, the benefits of music for relaxation and stress management, the application of music to improve memory and attention, as […]

Foods like ashwagandha, turmeric and walnuts help improve mental well-being (Shutterstock ) Ashwagandha Ashwagandha ( Shutterstock ) It is an ancient medical remedy used to protect our body from chronic stress. It helps in reducing the stress hormone – cortisol, further reducing anxiety. Have one teaspoon ashwagandha powder with warm milk 30 minutes prior to bedtime. Walnuts Walnuts ( Shutterstock ) These are the ultimate neuro-strengtheners that can keep your brain young, boost memory and prevent age-related cognitive decline. The B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids present in them are essential for the maintenance of the central nervous system. Walnuts can also be the key to a happier state of mind. They are rich in Vitamin E, that can be your natural mood elevator. The amount of walnuts needed is realistic, too: six halves a day. Have them soaked; to rinse the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors that make digesting unsoaked walnuts difficult. Turmeric Turmeric ( Shutterstock ) This can reverse the effect of chronic stress. The active compound in turmeric – curcumin is effective in increasing the feel-good hormone – dopamine and serotonin, reducing depression-related symptoms and enhancing alertness. You just need about half a teaspoon (2g to 3g) in a day, which is easily achievable through a typical Indian diet. Being fat-soluble, it is best to consume it cooked in tadka with black pepper or boiled in milk for best absorption. Photo credit: Matthew Roharik – Getty Images A natural alternative to ibuprofen. An antidote to anxiety. A sleep aid. A post-workout recovery booster. Those are some of the claims about cannabidiol (CBD) oil. You may have heard about this cannabis extract, which is said to provide widespread health benefits without the drawbacks of marijuana. And because of new federal legislation, you’ll probably be hearing a lot more about CBD over the next few years. Already, a growing number of athletes, including many in the trail running and ultramarathon community, consider CBD a key part of their regimen. And because of these early adopters, my interest piqued on CBD and its proposed benefits. Could CBD help my running? Can it help yours? I decided to find out. But before we explore how runners and other athletes use CBD, here’s what you need to know. What is CBD? CBD is shorthand for cannabidiol, one of the more than 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis. CBD products are said to deliver their many claimed benefits by boosting the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is a system that “is a unique signaling pathway that controls the function of a variety of systems throughout the body, including the cardiovascular system,” says Nicholas DiPatrizio, Ph.D., a professor of biomedical sciences at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine. (More on the endocannabinoid system later.) Endocannabinoids are familiar to runners because of their theorized role in running-induced mood boosts . That euphoric phenomenon is thought to be from activation of the same receptors in the brain that the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana acts upon. CBD “works through distinct-albeit not definitively identified-signaling systems than THC,” DiPatrizio says. CBD is non-psychoactive, which means it doesn’t produce a high. Here are some other common questions to think about: Almost all […]

( Natural News ) Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has a high possibility of progressing to dementia, which reduces the quality of life of affected individuals and makes it difficult for them to live independently. Fortunately, this condition can be prevented with proper treatment. Studies have shown that the cognitive function of people with MCI can still be improved with electroacupuncture . This claim is supported by a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine . In the systematic review and meta-analysis, a team of researchers at Daejeon University in South Korea looked at the effects of electroacupuncture on people with mild cognitive impairment in comparison to conventional treatments. Electroacupuncture has previously been used to treat various kinds of neurological disorders including MCI. (Related: Electroacupuncture helps older people regain their cognitive function after surgery .) The research team included five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 257 participants: 103 participants received electroacupuncture, while the remaining 154 participants received conventional treatments. After analyzing the findings of these RCTs, the research team found that treatment with electroacupuncture was more effective in improving the cognitive function of people with mild cognitive impairment than conventional treatments. In addition, there were no reported side effects in groups that received electroacupuncture. These findings suggest that electroacupuncture effectively improves cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment without causing side effects. Our senses diminish as we age, but there are ways to combat the reduced senses of taste and smell at mealtime to provide ongoing nourishment and satisfaction. What Affects Our Appetite? Taste buds that have been injured – by hot coffee, for example — regenerate more slowly as we age. Ill-fitting dentures, tooth pain, problems swallowing, digestive trouble and memory problems can also diminish taste, leading to loss of appetite, weight loss, weakness and other issues. But taste isn’t the only sense that impacts appetite. A weakened sense of smell, from aging as well as from medications such as antibiotics and blood pressure drugs, can also decrease the ability to taste and enjoy food. Dessert First – an Innovative Solution to Diminished Sense of Taste As long as your doctor has ruled out medical causes for your diminished sense of taste, and if you do not have diabetes or other health issues affected by diet, a “Dessert First” approach to mealtime may be for you. As its name suggests, “Dessert First” means you start with a few bites of your favorite sweets – even before you have your salad. Eating dessert first can awaken your taste buds and stimulate your appetite. Sweets tend to be high in calories and fat. While doctors tend to discourage this combination in most consumers, a little culinary decadence may be okay for older adults if it stimulates their appetite for healthier foods. Some desserts are as nutritious as they are delicious. Foods that contain fresh fruit, such as smoothies, are a fantastic way to get vitamins and minerals while still satisfying a sweet tooth. Banana ice cream and yogurt parfaits are healthy and easy to eat. Dark chocolate provides some health benefits, as it is high in some nutrients and a powerful source […]

Is learning a language like riding a bike? Well, yeah, if you consider the fact that you’re probably going to look a tad clumsy the first couple times you try it. And additionally, yes from the standpoint of “you never truly forget once you learn” — but therein lies the caveat. What does it mean, in this case, to truly learn a language? And how well do you have to learn it to have this semi-permanent ability to recover your knowledge? Second language attrition, or the process of slowly forgetting a second language, spares few people who let their language go unpracticed for a long enough period of time. But the rate and timing with which it sets in is variable. Though there’s no one-size-fits-all answer (or guarantee that your burgeoning Swedish skills will still be there for you if you let them collect dust for two years), there are ways to estimate how quickly you’ll forget a foreign language if you stop using it. What The Studies Say Second language attrition has been examined from a scientific standpoint, and the general consensus seems to be that your level of proficiency is going to make a big difference in how long you’ll retain your language knowledge after you stop practicing. When information makes it into your long-term memory — or when you don’t have to strain your brain too hard in order to speak — you’ll probably be able to get back to your previous level of fluency with just a bit of elbow grease and practice in the future. Various research has pointed to a few consistent variables that can influence the rate of second language attrition any given individual experiences. One is age (both how old you were when you learned your language, and how old you […]
New brain-like networks could help robots approach human-like efficiency at object recognition tasks Purdue University researchers have developed a process to use magnetics with brain-like networks to program and teach devices to better generalize about different objects. (Image provided) Download image WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Computers and artificial intelligence continue to usher in major changes in the way people shop. It is relatively easy to train a robot’s brain to create a shopping list, but what about ensuring that the robotic shopper can easily tell the difference between the thousands of products in the store? Purdue University researchers and experts in brain-inspired computing think part of the answer may be found in magnets. The researchers have developed a process to use magnetics with brain-like networks to program and teach devices such as personal robots, self-driving cars and drones to better generalize about different objects. “Our stochastic neural networks try to mimic certain activities of the human brain and compute through a connection of neurons and synapses,” said Kaushik Roy, Purdue’s Edward G. Tiedemann Jr. Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering . “This allows the computer brain to not only store information but also to generalize well about objects and then make inferences to perform better at distinguishing between objects.” Magnetic tunnel junction devices show switching behavior, which is stochastic in nature. (Image provided) Roy presented the technology during the annual German Physical Sciences Conference earlier this month in Germany. The work also appeared in the Frontiers in Neuroscience . The switching dynamics of a nano-magnet are similar to the electrical dynamics of neurons. Magnetic tunnel junction devices show switching behavior, which is stochastic in nature. The stochastic switching behavior is representative of a sigmoid switching behavior of a neuron. Such magnetic tunnel junctions can be also used to […]
Share on Facebook We all feel sad sometimes, hell I was sad a minute ago. Sadness and feeling bad is a part of our lives and happiness is one too. Unfortunately we feel the former more than the latter. Our mind and body sometimes work differently, while out body tells us to rest, our mind says that we need more work to do. Similarly when your stomach aches for a cheeseburger but your brain knows that you really shouldn’t be indulging on one. However, what we choose to put in our mouths and What we feel like are interrelated to each other. A big mac or a big pizza pie will alleviate your bad mood, but long-term happiness is rarely achieved by them. Fortunately there are many foods that are scientifically proven to give you a serotonin boost. These foods are healthy and are guaranteed to make you happy. So add them to your diet to make every meal a happy meal. Bananas Source: Pinterest This probably didn’t come as a surprise. Bananas are packed with potassium and also contain tryptophan that helps regulate mood. They are also a good source of Vitamin B folate and low levels of vitamin B has been linked to depression. Bananas are also a great carbohydrate source which will give you instant energy. So, listen to your mother and eat your bananas in the morning. Just 2 to 4 a day that will get you going. Watermelon Source: Pinterest It is watermelon season and what a great time to write about it. Watermelons are basically just water and are one of the best fruits to cool you down on a hot sunny day. The juicy and sweet bite of a watermelon doesn’t only make your taste buds happy. It is also capable of […]
Do mood enhancing supplements help you to work more efficiently? They do, they definitely do. I think the supplements give you a fabulous short-term solution. But you could experience some scary consequences – the side effects. I guess not so much of a problem while you’re young, but you really never know the long-term effects. Even if you stop taking the supplements and feel normal for a long time, you might not discover the damage that’s already been done until at a later stage in life. My first experience of mood enhancing supplements was with Noopept. Noopept is better known as a smart drug, often used by students to help them boost their short term memory before the exams. Well, it never worked for me that way. I needed some smart drugs for my exams – I didn’t "need them", but I wanted anything to help me memorize hundreds of pages worth of financial laws and regulations. I thought Noopept may me, could be my magical solution. It didn’t work, unfortunately. I don’t know if it was because I was already in my late 40’s and too old for it to work. Maybe Noopept was making a difference but my brain was regressing with age proportionally, so my overall memory level maintained the same… (That was my made up theory at the time!) But anyway, something wonderful happened instead – I became extremely chatty, cheerful and positive. An Hour Before The Full Effect Those endless "meetings" at work that I had never fancied in my adult life… With Noopept, I was suddenly happy to proactively share my positive views with whoever in the room. Client’s long-term strategic plans and stuff like that. Always positive, never end with negatives – at least that’s what it felt like to me. What […]
