Nootropics for Brain Health: Do They Really Do Anything?

Nootropics for Brain Health: Do They Really Do Anything?

This article was medically reviewed by professor emerita of psychological and brain sciences Susan Krauss Whitbourne, PhD, a member of the Prevention Medical Review Board , on April 18, 2019. More Americans than ever are focusing on improving their brain health by reducing stress and lowering their risk of Alzheimer’s, so it’s no surprise that the MIND diet took the fourth spot on U.S. News & World Report ‘s best overall diets for 2019 . But some people want to go beyond following a healthy diet and take supplements to enhance their mental performance. That’s where nootropic supplements—aka smart drugs—come in. Proponents of nootropics says that they can do everything from boost mood to increase creativity and brain power, so you not only feel good but have the energy and focus to be productive. But what are these "smart drugs," anyway? Do they really offer any health benefits, and are they safe to take? We tapped some health experts about the nootropic craze and what they can do for you. What are nootropics, exactly? Nootropics are supplements and prescription drugs that are meant to optimize your mental performance, reduce stress, and decrease your risk of cognitive decline. But what makes a supplement a nootropic isn’t clearly defined because theoretically, many vitamins and nutrients could help boost your brain health. For example, if you jumpstart your mornings with a cup of coffee, you’re taking a nootropic because caffeine is considered one. And l-theanine—a compound in green tea that’s known for improving mental focus—is a nootropic. "Nootropics is kind of a made-up term. It’s an arbitrary and imprecise term that people would say is a cognitive enhancer, but there are many cognitive enhancers," explains Richard S. Isaacson , MD, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell […]

10 Reasons Why You Should Spend More Time Outdoors

10 Reasons Why You Should Spend More Time Outdoors

why you should spend more time outdoors Most of us these days live a fast-paced, technology-packed lifestyle. Between work, the commute, taking care of the kids, cooking and cleaning, watching television, connecting on social media, and more, we’re spending an average of 90 percent of our time indoors. That would have been nearly unheard of a mere 50 years ago. Unfortunately, all this indoor time is having a negative impact on our health—and on our children’s health. It’s time we unplugged and stepped outside. Just in case you need a little motivation. Here are 10 very important reasons why putting “outdoor time” on your calendar is critical to your health and wellbeing! 1. Indoor Air Pollution is Worse than Outdoor You may think that you’re safe little home is much better for you than the big wide world, but it’s not so, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Studies have found that the concentration of some pollutants is often two-to-five times—and sometimes more than 100 times— higher indoors than outdoors . The California Air Resources Board also estimated that indoor air pollutant levels are 25-62 percent higher than outdoor levels. Worse, the most common indoor pollutants have been ranked among the top five environmental risks to public health. Indoors, you’re exposed to things like carbon monoxide and particulate matter from things like fireplaces and cooking appliances, as well as a number of other chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and flame retardants. Chemicals from furnishings, building materials, household and office products, and more can emit particles into the air, and don’t forget mold, dirt, dust, and pet dander. Increasing ventilation will help, but it’s best for your health to get outside a little bit every day. If you’re experiencing symptoms like burning eyes, breathing problems, scratchy throat, […]

Top 8 tips on staying healthy

Top 8 tips on staying healthy – words Alexa Wang You live this life in just one body – taking care of it can be a rewarding and enjoyable process if you take the right approach. Good habits and behavioural change are the best approach to health, which carries over to other areas of life in significant and meaningful ways. Read on for inspiring ways to stay healthy without pain. It might be the most useful coffee break you ever take! Realise: Calories are Not the Bad Guy A calorie is a measure of energy. Nothing more, nothing less. There are less calories in 100g of cake than 100g of coconut oil. Calories don’t make a food healthy or unhealthy – though the number you eat determines your weight gain/loss. Calorie intake is a simple slider from weight loss to weight gain – not a bad, unhealthy, or dirty word. Your daily calorie requirements (TDEE – Total Daily Energy Expenditure — which you can calculate online) is key. If you eat more than this, you’ll gain weight, if you eat less than your TDEE, you’ll lose weight. Eat more, weigh more. Eat less, weigh less. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Try Intermittent Energy Restriction No matter your weight or bodyfat, it’s important to eat less than your body needs sometimes. This is called intermittent energy restriction ( not the same as intermittent fasting, the fad diet) – and it doesn’t mean starving yourself. Eating less than you need at times helps to support cell health and long-term metabolic health. Not to mention helps to keep your weight under control or give a boost to a diet that’s plateauing. Intermittent […]

Men, Tap into This Natural Resource for an Optimal You

Men, Tap into This Natural Resource for an Optimal You

While men also have small amounts of estrogen in their bodies, testosterone is the primary sex hormone that helps make men who and what they are. Maintaining proper levels of testosterone is important to male health. While most men experience declines in this essential hormone, many men don’t realize they’re suffering from Low-T until they’ve received blood tests prescribed by a physician. There are ways for men to tap into this natural resource in their daily lives. It’s possible for men to harness its power to enjoy a better life; that includes having more energy, burning fat faster, getting a better night’s sleep, and being more productive at work. Throughout the day, there are steps men can take to tap into the power of testosterone. That starts with the beginning of the day–fueling up to face the day. There’s no good replacement for a proper breakfast. The body interprets sleep time as a period of starvation. That translates to a drop in the levels of leptin and insulin, which are important in helping the body turn food into fuel. That’s why having breakfast shortly after waking up is so important to maintaining a healthy hormonal balance . Eating within an hour of waking up helps to get the leptin going. That lets your body know that things are okay and that there is not a famine. With increased leptin levels, hunger is decreased and energy expenditure increased. What you EAT for breakfast matters, too. To have energy that lasts until lunchtime, a good breakfast is necessary. While it may be tempting to turn to an over the counter vitamin to supplement a quickly scarfed down toaster pastry, that is not the best course of action. What making the right breakfast choices really means is choosing foods that will produce […]

Saving our mothers from dementia: How we can help our parents age successfully

What we can do to ensure that our mothers are positive, happy and mentally active, so dementia does not set in for as long as possible. Women’s Health Month is brought to you by Do you think you genuinely engage with your parents? Do you spend quality time with them? It is natural for young adults to spend lesser time with their parents as they grow older. Youngsters have their own lives and families, and careers. Parents have a different worldview, and conversations with them can be laborious. Yes, we may love our parents, we may take them out for dinners or movies, and spend time with them. But as sons and daughters, do we provide them with enough mental support and the patience they need? Take your time to think about it. If your honest answer is ‘no’, it isn’t just the guilt you will have to deal with in the near future. You will also have to deal with their dementia sooner than later, says Dr Lakshmipathy Ramesh, Senior Consultant – Geriatrics, at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. Dementia is not a specific disease. It is a term used to refer to a group of diseases associated with decline in memory and loss of other mental skills, and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. As mortality rates increase in developing countries and people live longer, health experts have warned that countries like India could face an epidemic of dementia among its elderly in the coming decades. Since the average life-expectancy in women is more and we have a general apathy towards their health, our mothers are even more vulnerable to dementia than our fathers. In India, women are prone to social isolation and withdrawal from society. They tend to be more diffident, face a lot […]

6 Benefits of Passion Fruit (Maracuya) & How to Eat It

This tropical fruit has many names and just as many health benefits. It contains powerful antioxidants, speeds up your metabolism, and tastes delicious. Read on to find out whether you should add passion fruit to your diet. Passion fruit is a purple or yellow tropical fruit that grows on the vine of several members of the Passiflora genus, most notably Passiflora edulis . Besides “passion fruit,” it has many names, including maracuya in Spanish, maracuja in Portuguese, and lilikoi or liliko’i in Hawaiian [ R ]. Passion fruits have a tart , almost sour flavor. Unsurprisingly, the fruits get sweeter and less tart the riper they are [ R ]. Passion fruit has a handful of uses in traditional medicine. Among the Kalenjin people of Kenya, pregnant women eat passion fruit to increase their blood volume , help with appetite and digestion, and improve the skin of the baby after birth . In South America, passion fruit is a traditional tonic for anxiety , insomnia , asthma , bronchitis , and urinary tract infection [ R , R ]. The edible part of the passion fruit is the juicy, pulpy interior. Somewhat like a pomegranate , passion fruit has many seeds, each surrounded by a casing of sweet flesh. Passion fruit seeds are edible and contain a powerful antioxidant called piceatannol [ R , R ]. Despite being a healthy and nutritious fruit, most people eat passion fruit for its pleasant flavor. The most important varieties of passion fruit are the purple ( Passiflora edulis f. edulis ) and yellow passion fruit ( Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa ) [ R , R ]. Of these, the yellow passion fruit is larger, hardier, and more often used for juice production, but the purple passion fruit is sweeter and more aromatic. […]

Zapping our brains with magnets could help reverse memory loss

Zapping our brains with magnets could help reverse memory loss

Forgetfulness is one of the hallmarks of ageing – almost 40 per cent of people aged 65 or older have some form of age-related memory loss . And usually once forgetfulness has set in, things only get worse with age. But now a new kind of brain-zapping treatment might be able to reverse this slow decline. “Everyone reports having worse memory as they get older,” says Joel Voss, associate professor at Northwestern University in the United States and the lead author of a study finding that magnetic stimulation of the brain can boost memory. “So, forgetting things like where you left your keys or where you parked your car, or what name goes along with a face. As we get older, they become worse and worse.” These lapses in memory are often due to the natural degeneration of the hippocampus, a brain region heavily associated with short-term, long-term, and spatial memory. “The hippocampus is shrinking to some degree in age,” Voss explains. “So what shows up on people’s MRI scans is reduced, effectively suggesting that the hippocampus is not doing as good of a job at communicating with the areas of the brain that it usually talks to when it needs to build a memory.” But while there’s no way to regrow the hippocampus to the size found in young adults, scientists like Voss believe that with the right stimulation, this brain region can still recover a little of its youthful vigour. In a new study published in the scientific journal Neurology , Voss and his team at Northwestern University show how magnetic pulses can revitalize the hippocampus and improve the memory of older adults. “We still don’t fully understand the mechanism,” Voss clarifies. “But the activity levels that we measure after the stimulations suggests a greater kind of […]

Ready to quit eating added sugars? Here are 6 great things that happen if you do

( Natural News ) It can be difficult to limit your sugar intake, especially if you have a sweet tooth. If you’re still on the fence about making changes to your diet, here are six benefits that you can enjoy if you quit eating foods rich in sugar . Fruits are a good source of healthy sugar Researchers have found that sugar can fool the brain into wanting more of it. However, Dr. Kimber Stanhope, a nutritional biologist at the University of California (UC), Davis , noted that in moderation, the sugar found in whole foods like fruits and vegetables is good for you. Naturally occurring sugars also come with fiber, minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy. Stanhope added that consuming less sugary foods is also linked to these six incredible health benefits. You’ll have younger-looking skin. The amount of sugary foods you consume affects the amount of sugar in your bloodstream, and studies have found that high blood sugar levels are associated with “a molecular domino effect called glycation.” Glycation refers to a process that may hinder the repair of collagen, which makes your skin look plump. This reduces skin elasticity and can cause premature wrinkles. Consuming less sugar can help reduce sagging and other visible signs of aging. (Related: How to detox yourself from sugar: A day-by-day guide .) It lowers your risk for Type 2 diabetes. Cutting back on sugary desserts makes it easier to manage your weight. This also helps lower your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. A diet with a lot of fast-digesting carbohydrates such as sugar makes your pancreas release lots of insulin. This constant demand can make your insulin-producing cells malfunction and result in diabetes. Mother Nature’s micronutrient secret : Organic Broccoli Sprout Capsules now […]

Sustainable fashion is blowing up on social media with influencers and celebrities, including the former actress Meghan Markle, now officially known as the Duchess of Sussex, making a bigger “well fashion” impact. The future is all about natural fibres that are sustainably sourced, such as silk, linen, organic cotton, wool, alpaca, flax and hemp, as well as semi-synthetic and cellulosic fibres that break down more easily. Art therapy helps dementia patients communicate and connect

Art therapy helps dementia patients communicate and connect

It looks like an art class with brushes, paints and scissors, but it’s not. It’s an art therapy session. “You don’t have to be an artist. Anybody can do art therapy, anybody can make art,” said art therapist Suzanne DuFour. Brightview Warren resident Jo Coniglione finished his first product. “I don’t know if it’s doing any good for anybody else, but it did well for me. I enjoyed doing it,” he said. “Art therapy is a nonverbal communication that is taking place during a session. It’s different from an art class where you are given instruction,” DuFour said. “It’s sort of like if you were to go to a counselor, a traditional counseling type session, however it incorporates art so that the therapeutic process comes within the art making itself.” One session is for residents of Wellspring Village at Brightview Warren, a senior living community. Participants there have memory issues. “Dementia is the umbrella term; there are many different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s,” said geriatric psychiatrist Dr. Matthew Barnas. “The reason why the two words Alzheimer’s and dementia are synonymous is because by far Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia.” The Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater New Jersey Chapter indicates nationwide there are 5 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease. In New Jersey, there are 180,000 residents aged 65 or older affected by the disease. “People who have dementia, Alzheimer’s dementia, they have problems with communication, with cognition and memory, so engaging in art therapy allows a different form, a different mechanism, avenue of communication. It allows them to express their feelings. It activates part of their brain that maybe they’re not always activating such as a creativity, visual-spatial, hand-eye coordination,” said Barnas. The art therapist incorporates different materials into her sessions, like papers of various textures and […]

3 Crazy Myths About the Aging Brain and a Few Legitimate Concerns

3 Crazy Myths About the Aging Brain and a Few Legitimate Concerns

When you think about using diet and exercise to stay fit and healthy after 60, how many of those thoughts go into a fitness plan for your brain? Yes, in spite of what you’ve heard, diet and mental exercise can improve your aging brain! In today’s video, Dr. Sarah Brewer presents ways to counteract the myths about what getting older inevitably does to your brain – and how to tell when you really do need help. Brain Myth # 1: Your Brain Can’t Change after 60 This myth overlooks the fact that even when you’re asleep, your brain is awake and busily cleaning house. Dr. Sarah explains how it clears out any unused connections to make room for new ones. Every time you exercise your brain with a new task, it builds connections. Read a book on an unfamiliar topic. Study a new language. Take classes to broaden your horizons. Sit down with a crossword puzzle. Or entertain yourself with our online games ! All these things will challenge your brain. And a mentally stimulated brain is constantly creating pathways. Myth #2: Memory in Older Women Must Fail Many of us have walked from one room to another and not remembered why. But is this a sign that we’re headed for catastrophic memory loss? Not at all, says Dr. Sarah. Specific brain-friendly foods and supplements can actually strengthen memory in older women. Her favorite suggestions? Leafy Greens Popeye was right! Eating your spinach – or kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and other green vegetables – boosts your brain function. They’re loaded with chlorophyll, Vitamin K and a range of B vitamins. But their real power comes from nitrates. Your body converts nitrates to circulation-boosting nitrites that flood your brain with those nutrients and oxygen too! For maximum nutrition and absorption, […]

What is Cortisol? How High Stress Hormone Levels Wreck Havoc On Your Mental & Physical Health

Stress is a feeling most everyone experiences from time to time. In order to cope with these moments, days, months, years when they occur, the body responds by releasing a hormone called cortisol. Go Behind the Scenes at a Real Detox Retreat

When most of us hear the word “ detox ,” we immediately think of “cleansing” our digestive systems with bottles and bottles of green juice , skipping solid food to meet some health goal. However, cleansing in the way that detox company Amaveda recommends is much more nuanced. Focusing on nutrition, brain health, and mindfulness rather than deprivation, their Ayurvedic-inspired programs and retreats nourish retreat-goers for one week straight. Most recently, they’ve partnered with holistic branding methodology Brand Human to create a week-long detox and personal positioning experience in Mancora, Peru. Centered around “Body, Mind, and Brand,” this pause encourages entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs to boost the body and brand’s productivity. The leaders of the retreat — Amaveda founder Emily Shaw and Brand Human founder Jasmine Takanikos — talk us through what to expect from a luxurious, relaxing, thoughtfully designed detox retreat. Guests first arrive to the Kichic Boutique Hotel in Mancora, often a bit groggy from the flight, and are immediately dropped into a peaceful zone. To rejuvenate guests after travel and prep them for the first full day of the retreat the next day, they are treated to a meal, a walk on the beach at sunset, and some mindfulness practices to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the part that calms stress and regulates your blood pressure and a number of the body’s other processes). Every morning, the routine is virtually the same — the day begins with a fresh aloe-vera-based detox drink, followed by some movement in the property’s outdoor yoga space to get the participants’ bodies and energy flowing. Throughout the week, there are then variations in the itinerary and some moments of downtime, such massage treatments, opportunities to swim in the hotel’s pool or at the beach, or private in-room detox practices (including pampering with […]

Why does Wikipedia want to deprive you of Acupuncture

Why does Wikipedia want to deprive you of Acupuncture

( Natural News ) Although it is completely ignored by the mainstream media, all natural and alternative medical philosophy and therapies remain under constant attack in the United States, as well as in the UK, France, Canada, Australia and elsewhere. In addition to the pharmaceutical industry’s profitable interests tied to our federal health agencies (FDA, CDC, etc.) to undermine natural healing, Wikipedia and an army of Skeptic healthcare mercenaries are also making every effort to deprive you of access to non-drug based therapies, which lie outside their narrow paradigm of what qualifies as medicine. (Article by Richard Gale and Gary Null republished from PRN.fm ) As we have outlined in previous articles to counter Skepticism’s, Science Based Medicine’s (SBM) and Wikipedia’s criticisms and assaults on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), including homeopathy, naturopathy and energy medicine, sound science is clearly not on their side. The late astrophysicist Stephen Hawking noted, “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” Hawking’s statement accurately summarizes the dominant paradigm of medical materialism being promoted by Wikipedia. How often do we hear Skeptics and SBM advocates use repeatedly the ill-informed argument that natural healing modalities simply don’t make sense or are implausible? And this is sufficient reason to discredit them? Such hypotheses, veiled in the fantasy of being valid conclusions, has no place in real science nor for substantiating any medical truth, especially to relegate all CAM therapies to the trash bin of “pseudo-science.” In effect, non-scientific subjective opinions play an important role in SBM’s gold-standard “scientific method.” Mother Nature’s micronutrient secret : Organic Broccoli Sprout Capsules now available, delivering 280mg of high-density nutrition, including the extraordinary "sulforaphane" and "glucosinolate" nutrients found only in cruciferous healing foods. ( Natural News ) The 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre is upon us, and Apple is reportedly celebrating this infamously horrific event by censoring all music from its Apple Music streaming service that makes any mention of the atrocity and who caused it. Staying true to its newfound alliance with the communist Chinese government, Apple is doing its part to make sure that younger generations of Chinese people remain ignorant about the fact that their communist leaders murdered thousands of innocent people in cold blood, simply for the “crime” of protesting their tyranny. Breitbart News has reported that a music artist by the name of Jacky Cheung, based out of Hong Kong, recently had one of his songs pulled from Apple Music because it makes mention of the 1989 incident – though all of Cheung’s other songs remain. “The youth are angry, heaven and earth are weeping,” the now-banned song’s lyrics read. “How did our land become a sea of blood? How did the path home become a path of no return?” the lyrics go on to state, referring to the thousands of innocent Chinese people who lost their lives that fateful day. Research highlights benefits of cherry ingredients

Research shows that Montmorency tart cherries can aid in improved sleep quality and reduced inflammation, Lynn Vollbrecht says. (Image courtesy of the Cherry Marketing Institute) Today, an increasing number of consumers are turning to food and beverages to advance their health and wellness . To support this trend, experts highlight that quality research is helping ingredients new and old further their healthy association. For the cherry market, it remains no different. “Over the past decade, researchers have conducted any number of studies focusing on the role Montmorency tart cherries can play in a person’s pursuit of health, from aiding in sleep quantity and quality (they’re a naturally occurring source of melatonin) to reducing inflammation,” says Lynn Vollbrecht, director of strategic marketing for the DeWitt, Mich.-based Cherry Marketing Institute. At the beginning of 2019, a study published in Food & Function found that 8 ounces of 100 percent tart cherry juice consumed daily for four weeks significantly reduced certain biomarkers of inflammation that are associated with chronic disease among overweight and obese adults, according to a release from the Cherry Marketing Institute. “Tart cherries are among the richest sources of anthocyanins, and our results found that these polyphenols were effectively digested and absorbed,” said lead author Keith R. Martin, assistant professor at the Center for Nutraceutical and Dietary Supplement Research at the University of Memphis, in a statement. “We also observed a positive effect of tart cherry juice on the specific markers of inflammation related to chronic disease, potentially linked to these beneficial compounds.” Brian Gerberding, director of sales and marketing for Traverse City, Mich.-based Shoreline Fruit LLC, highlights that increased awareness around the health benefits of cherries has aided the fruit in formulation usage. “The message regarding the benefits of Montmorency tart cherries seems to be getting through to […]
