If you can’t find organic ones, washing, rubbing, and scrubbing your produce can help remove pesticides. Researchers from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst suggests another method: soaking it in a baking soda and water solution.

The researchers conducted a study to determine how effective different washing methods were at removing pesticides. They found that soaking apples in a baking soda solution for two minutes removed more pesticides than submerging them in a bleach solution or washing them in running water for two minutes. When they let the apples soak in the baking soda solution for 12 to 15 minutes, the pesticides used in the study were completely gone.
