( Natural News ) Some 30 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and the number of people affected continues to grow every year. The disease and its hallmark symptom, high blood sugar, are known to have a number of risk factors like poor diet and sedentary lifestyle. But a growing body of evidence shows that there may be an unseen cause of high blood sugar: Electromagnetic radiation. And for people with diabetes, exposure to this invisible threat can be an even bigger problem. Despite claims that electromagnetic fields are safe and that the radiation emitted from cellphones and other gadgets isn’t a threat to human health, studies are showing that the risks are real. While its easier to ignore these risks than it is to take a second look at what our beloved devices may be doing to us, the truth is that convenience always comes with a cost. And with modern technology, that cost may just be your health. High blood sugar and electromagnetic radiation Magda Havas, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource Studies at Trent University , has published peer-reviewed research in the journla Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine on this most alarming phenomenon. Dr. Havas presents multiple case studies showing that electromagnetic radiation [EMR] can cause a spike in blood glucose levels. Discussing her findings, Havas wrote : These results show that plasma glucose levels, in the Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic cases reported, respond to electromagnetic pollution in the form of radio frequencies in the kHz range associated with indoor wiring (dirty electricity). Type 1 diabetics require less insulin in an electromagnetically clean environment and blood sugar levels for Type 2 diabetics increase with increasing exposure to dirty electricity. ( Natural News ) One of the negative effects of living in today’s high-paced world is an elevated level of anxiety. With the pressures brought about by work, studies, or even home, most people always live in constant worry, with some even turning to drugs for relief – with seriously detrimental effects. The results of a study by researchers from Peru could offer good news: Essential oil aromatherapy, together with mindfulness meditation, could offer alternative forms of relief for anxiety . The Amercian Psychological Association (APA) defines anxiety as “an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” This reaction stems from our ancestors’ fight-or-flight reaction – which was necessary for them to survive. These days, we may not be exposed to the same things, but anxiety still plays an important role in our survival. For example, we feel anxious when we cross the street, so we look both ways – reducing the potential dangers that we may face if we hadn’t. However, anxiety becomes a problem when this “fight-or-flight” reaction grows out of control. The resulting condition, called an anxiety disorder , leads to physical symptoms like increased blood pressure and nausea and interferes with the normal function of the brain. In the study, which was published in the January 2017 edition of the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine , researchers looked at how two Satureja species – S. brevicalyx and S. boliviana – can be used in aromatherapy to reduce anxiety levels. The two plants have been used in traditional Andean medicine, with S. brevicalyx used as an analgesic and S. boliviana for altitude sickness and migraines. CREDIT: Getty Images Whether balancing a side-hustle or juggling work and family, every self-employed person and business owner could use a little (or a lot) more energy. If you want to increase your productivity and results, coffee can only take you so far. It helps, instead, to start at the source: you. Here are three steps to channel your energy at the start of the day to avoid burnout. 1. Master Your Morning Routine We’ve all heard about the over-the-top morning routines of the ultra-successful. While you don’t have to dive into a cryotherapy tank like Tony Robbins , research shows a solid morning routine can position your entire day for success. Two examples of good habits to incorporate into your mornings are meditation and breath work. I’ve found that these can truly set my mood and focus for the day when I make the time for them. Apps like Headspace and Holosync can help you tap into the beneficial brain waves associated with meditating. Another healthy morning habit is low-intensity cardio. I had the opportunity to interview Anthony DeClementi , author of Biohacking Secrets , and I was intrigued because, 1) He was barefoot for our interview (an increasingly popular biohack called ‘Earthing’), and 2) He claims you can "biohack" your energy to increase focus and overall wellbeing. Anthony says just 20 minutes of gentle cardio at the start of your day can benefit your memory, protect you from neuro-degenerative diseases, increase your brain drive, and help the formation of new brain cells. What’s not to like? 2. Identify One Task If you’re anything like me, then you juggle multiple to-do lists, notepads, and planners. However, research shows this can actually be counterproductive. Long to-do lists can make you preoccupied with smaller, more tolerable tasks, such as picking […]
( Natural News ) There is growing evidence that over-the-counter (OTC) pain medicines have adverse effects on the brain. OTC pain medicines, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, could affect the mind of its users , according to a review of studies published in the journal Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences . The study was carried out by a team of researchers from University of California , Santa Barbara who examined whether over-the-counter pain medications affected people’s thoughts and emotions. In the study review, the research team analyzed seven studies published between 2010 and 2016. “Researchers started looking at these [OTC] pain medication effects on psychology because there have been debates in the literature if brain regions responsive to physical pain are also responsive to social pain,” said lead author Kyle Ratner, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences at the Universi t y of California , Santa Barbara . A study in the review published in 2016 revealed that the ability of people to empathize with others might go down after acetaminophen is taken. The researchers of that study found that the participants were less affected when they read about other people suffering from physical or emotional pain in comparison to those who did not take the medicine. Moreover, one of the studies in the review found that acetaminophen increased the number of errors participants made when they played a game. In another study included in the paper, it was revealed that female participants who took ibuprofen felt less-unpleasant feelings from emotionally painful experiences compared to those who took a placebo. However, on the other hand, the male participants in the study reported the opposite. ( Natural News ) One of the most famous lines from cult-classic, The Princess Bride , says, “life is pain. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.” Drug companies are a perfect example of this – but their tactics focus more on emphasizing that toxic chemicals and synthetic remedies are the only way to relieve discomfort. After all, what’s easier than popping a pill that instantly makes you feel better? Yet a consequence of such a careless approach to health is an uninformed decision-making process when it comes to your overall well-being. Studies have proven that over-the-counter painkillers actually do more harm than good, with long-term consequences including an increased risk of heart attack and decreased fertility. The strange thing about all of this is that painkillers are actually imitations of natural substances. The good news, though, is that we have compiled a list of natural ways to relieve pain that do not carry any harmful side effects. (h/t to BioPrepper.com ) White willow bark – This is the main ingredient of aspirin. White willow bark contains salicin that is converted to salicylic acid as it enters the stomach. This is a powerful substance that has been studied to lessen inflammation, remedy gastric upset, and treat various forms of pain. White willow bark may also be used to reduce a fever, ease painful menstruation, and eliminate migraines . Take note though that white willow bark should not be taken by those with blood or kidney disorders, as the herb can exacerbate these conditions. Capsaicin – Capsaicin blocks the production of “substance P” that transmits pain signals to the brain. This is naturally abundant in peppers. There is also evidence that suggests its effectiveness in reducing pain caused by arthritis . Cat’s claw – South American traditional healers prescribe […]

( Natural News ) Depression is a common and serious medical illness that affects how you feel, act, or perform. According to the National Institute of Mental Health , 16 million adults in the U.S. had at least one depressive episode in 2012. Meanwhile, 350 million people worldwide suffer from the condition. With these overwhelming statistics and the seeming ineffective of prescription drugs, it’s no wonder people are looking for an alternative way to combat depression. Ayahuasca, a traditional Amazonian medicine is known for being a hallucinogenic concoction . It contains ingredients illegal in most countries and is served in many religious rituals in South America. Ayahuasca is traditionally brewed from the bark of a jungle vine and the leaves of a shrub. In a recent research study, it was proven to drastically help in improving hard-to-treat depression by rapidly improving mood. In March 2015, researchers from Brazil published the result from clinical tests on ayahuasca and its therapeutic benefits for treating depression. The clinical trial involved administering a single dose of Ayahuasca to 14 people who were suffering from hard-to-treat depression. Meanwhile, 15 people suffering from the same condition received a placebo drink. Those who were given the placebo drink were not aware that they were drinking a non-ayahuasca concoction. The researchers mixed the same bitter and deep-brown brew while making sure that all the recipients from the clinical trial haven’t tasted ayahuasca nor took any psychedelic drugs before. ( Natural News ) A lot of people, especially those who are young, make the mistake of taking Alzheimer’s disease for granted – that, despite it being the most common cause of dementia and the likelihood of getting the condition increases with age. Fortunately, research has revealed that B complex vitamins can significantly reduce the risk of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s by preserving brain volume and even reversing mild cognitive decline – a symptom usually seen during the early stages of the disease. In a study in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry , researchers have established that vitamin B supplementation – in particular, vitamins B6, B9, and B12 – significantly improved the cognition and memory function of older adults that exhibited mild cognitive impairment. The authors of the study attributed it to the ability of B vitamins to reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid used to be a biological marker for Alzheimer’s disease. (Related: How vitamin B-12 treats Alzheimer’s disease .) It has a more sinister role in the body – many scientists believe that homocysteine is a pro-inflammatory substance that causes brain damage and increases the likelihood that a person will be affected by the condition. Multiple studies have shown that patients with mild cognitive impairment, a typical precursor to Alzheimer’s, have elevated levels of homocysteine in their system. It’s also responsible for problems with brain circulation since it increases oxidative stress and damages the blood-brain barriers. However, its worst (and potentially most lethal) side effect is the buildup of beta-amyloid protein in the brain – a landmark symptom for Alzheimer’s disease. ( Natural News ) The mass medication of citizens via water fluoridation may be one of the greatest crimes against humanity taking place today — and it’s also one of the most under-reported scandals, too. Daring to speak out about the real facts on fluoride will get you stamped as a “crazy conspiracy theorist,” just like questioning vaccine safety or talking about the dangers of glyphosate will get you a fast-pass to being labeled “anti-science.” But, even though the cost may be great, a few brave souls are still willing to speak out about the health hazards foisted upon us by the powers that be. Dr. David Kennedy, a biological dentist, recently called water fluoridation a “public health fraud,” and his description couldn’t be any more correct. The fraud of fluoride First and foremost, fluoride is not an essential nutrient. Humans do not, and never will, need fluoride to be healthy. In fact, quite the opposite is true: Fluoride is a highly toxic substance. That’s why there is a poison warning on toothpaste and other fluoride-containing products. As Fluoride Action Network explains , fluoride has historically been used as a pesticide — and that’s why consuming too much fluoride in one sitting can lead to serious poisoning, and even death. But the dangers of fluoride don’t end with the acute. Long-term, there are many other negative side effects to be had. Dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis are the two most obvious forms of harm. Experts have noted that by the time fluoride has been deposited in bone tissue, it is very likely that other forms of less detectable damage have taken place. For example, studies have shown chronic fluoride consumption can lead to arthritic pain and an increased risk of fractures — even before skeletal fluorosis has set in. […]
by Micaela Foley: Are you plagued by brain fog? Is that third cup of coffee just not cutting it? You’re in luck… As always, herbs are on your side. There are many herbs that can help us to think sharper, feel smarter, and overall improve our cognitive abilities. Herbs with nootropic properties are known to enhance mood, memory, and focus — without the nasty side effects, tolerance, or withdrawal associated with pharmaceuticals like Adderall, Ritalin, and Vyvanse. These herbs work by increasing circulation to the brain, tonifying brain tissue, modulating the concentration of neurotransmitters, reducing brain inflammation, stimulating the growth of neural nerves and new brain cells, and protecting the brain from free-radical damage by acting as antioxidants. All that, and so much more! Here are 5 potent herbs to help you think sharper. Gotu Kola for Tonifying Brain Tissue Gotu Kola ( Centella asiatica ) is a prized herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine—where it is considered to be a Shen Tonic—and Ayurveda, where it is considered to be a Sattvic herb. Gotu Kola helps to sharpen the mind by repairing damaged neurons in the brain and providing the neurological system with energy and sustenance. Gotu Kola is also very tonifying to nerves and both soft and connective tissues—taking it over a period of time can heal and strengthen nerve pathways in the body and brain. Gotu Kola has been proven to raise oxygen uptake levels in the brain and encourage trans-hemispheric synchronization, which shifts the brainwave state into the alpha, gamma and theta spectrums associated with the type of consciousness expansion that has been studied in long-term meditators. This herb is specifically indicated for fatigue accompanied with mind fogginess and can be used in cases of Alzheimer’s and stroke, to help brain tissues recover vitality. Gotu Kola makes […]
( Natural News ) Playing video games isn’t bad at all, especially when it requires physical activity. “Exergaming,” a term used to describe playing interactive video games, can help improve the cognitive function of older adults , according to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience . The study was made after Cay Anderson-Hanley, who was the lead author, and her team discovered in previous research that older people who exercised with interactive video games gained greater cognitive health benefits than those who depended on traditional exercise alone. For this study, Anderson-Hanley and her team aimed to target older adults diagnosed with or at risk of mild cognitive impairment, which is a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. Initially, researchers recruited over 100 older adults diagnosed with or at risk for mild cognitive impairment. However, only 14 participants continued exergaming for over six months. The 14 participants were divided into two groups. The first group was tasked to pedal along a scenic virtual reality bike path several times each week; while the second group was instructed to pedal while playing a video game that included chasing dragons and collecting coins, which is a more challenging task for the brain compared to that of the first group. The special bikes used were placed at different locations, such as hospitals, community centers, and independent living centers. The researchers compared the results with data gathered from a different group of eight older people who played video games on a laptop but did not pedal, and data from the earlier research who only rode a traditional stationary bike with no gaming component. When I was younger, I remember thinking of summer as a time of total relaxation. After all, I was out of school and had nothing else to do but sleep late and laze away the days. Oh how things have changed… Summer is a completely different animal in adulthood. Not only do I have all of my regular work to do, but with the kids home from school, it feels like my workload is at least doubled… And that doesn’t even count planning vacations or the inevitable rush of getting them ready for school to start back up at summer’s end. In short, summers tend to exhaust me. But in all honesty, there was a time that, no matter what time of year it was, I felt so drained I couldn’t even think straight. That set me on a mission to discover how I could boost my energy, beat the fatigue and finally feel normal again — without relying on coffee to get through the day. Even though coffee’s health benefits are growing daily, more than two or three cups and I’ve got the jitters. So, if you’re feeling run down and drug out, I’ve got 6 super easy steps that can help you find lasting energy for your mind and body — and #6 is the easiest of them all… Step #1 – Hydrate When you’re constantly running around putting out fires, you can feel like there’s simply no time to take care of yourself… And, that includes making sure you drink enough water each day. But, the truth is that dehydration could be one of the biggest reasons behind your exhaustion. In order to supercharge you energy levels, be sure to drink at least nine (eight ounce) cups of water a day if you’re a woman. For […]
( Natural News ) Cognitive and mental decline is one of the most worrisome effects of aging. A recent study shows that by supplementing your diet with pomegranate, you can support – and restore – brain function, even following a stroke . As you age, your risk of developing bodily conditions increases. For example, going above the age of 60 puts you at a higher risk of developing cataracts and other vision problems. But it’s not just the body that declines with age – the brain does, too. Apart from dementia and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease , you may have to worry about stroke which, although a vascular disease, can damage your brain cells and impair your mental function as a result. That consuming pomegranates has many benefits for your health is not news, but a new study touts its ability to protect the brain from decline and even promote recovery from stroke. The secret likely has to do with polyphenols, biomolecules that protect plants from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. When consumed, they offer a host of health benefits, one of which is maintaining brain health . Many types of fruits and vegetables contain polyphenols. To find this natural, health-boosting chemical, look for items with rich flavors and colors, such as grapes, blueberries, celery, peppermint, cloves, and oregano, among others. Processed products like tea, dark chocolate , and coffee also contain polyphenols, but the presence of additives and other foreign chemicals could do your body more harm than good in the long run. Pomegranates are well-known for their benefits to older individuals, especially in terms of blood flow and brain function . A recent study performed by researchers from Brown University and Loma Linda University tested the effects of polyphenols derived from pomegranates on brain health. Of particular […]
( Natural News ) Moringa oleifera (commonly known as moringa ) is widely known for its numerous health benefits. In fact, a lot of studies have associated the consumption of moringa to the treatment of various health conditions, including diabetes. In a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine , it has been found that consuming moringa leaf powder could be beneficial for diabetics . The study, carried out by a team of researchers at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, looked at the effects of moringa leaf powder on glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, corporal weight, and predominant groups of microbiota in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic mice. The research team particularly evaluated moringa leaf powder as most data on the benefits of moringa come from its leaves. (Related: Moringa oleifera can help treat diabetes, study finds .) The research team divided mice into five groups: one control group, one healthy group treated with moringa, one untreated diabetic group, one diabetic group treated with moringa, and one diabetic group treated with glibenclamide. Moringa treatment groups received a 50-milligram (mg) dose of moringa leaf powder once a day for eight weeks, while the glibenclamide group received a 600 micrograms per kilogram (μg/kg) dose. The team measured the glucose level and body weight of the mice once every week, while they evaluated the cholesterol and triglyceride levels of the mice at the end of the study. Based on the results of the study, the mice groups that received the moringa leaf powder supplementation experienced reductions of glucose levels and enterobacteria population. In addition, the supplement provided these benefits without causing any side effect. ( Natural News ) Canola oil may be marketed as a vegetable oil, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s healthy. Few people know canola oil’s dirty secret: There is no such thing as a canola plant . It’s actually made from hybridized rapeseed. Rapeseed oil was once commonly used for industrial applications and in food — until the health problems associated with this oil became overwhelmingly apparent. In the 1970’s, hybridized rapeseed was “rebranded” as canola oil, to make it more appealing to consumers. Nowadays, canola oil is lauded for its purported health benefits; some organizations like The Canola Oil Council of Canada proclaim that it’s the “healthiest” of all cooking oils. Others advertise it as a “low cost” alternative to olive oil, but as studies now show, the two are not even close to being equal. Under the “anti-saturated fat” dogma of modern nutrition led by corporate interests, canola oil looks great — but it really isn’t. There are many reasons to avoid canola oil , even if it’s organic. And now, new research has just added to the list: Canola oil can actually affect your brain and increase memory loss . As it turns out, canola oil really isn’t a “healthier” version of rapeseed oil. Who knew? Science shows canola oil is bad for your brain Researchers from Temple University investigated the impact of canola oil on brain health. Hailing from the university’s Alzheimer’s Center, the team looked at the effects daily consumption had on mice whose brains were exhibiting common signs of Alzheimer’s (plaques and tangles). ( Natural News ) Turmeric is often touted for its anti-inflammatory properties, but it has another superpower that gets a lot less attention: it’s a potent neuroprotector . This spice’s main active ingredient is curcumin, which gives it its cheerful yellow-orange hue. Researchers from the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA) have now shown that curcumin supplementation can boost memory performance after looking at 40 people between the ages of 50 and 90 with normal brains and mild memory complaints. The participants were randomly assigned to a placebo group or a control that took 90 milligrams a day of curcumin twice a day over the course of year and a half. Researchers measured everyone’s curcumin levels in their blood at the trial’s inception and conclusion. They also gave the subjects cognitive tests before the study, upon its completion, and every six months throughout its duration. After analyzing the data, they found that those who took daily curcumin had a 30 percent improvement in memory tests. Moreover, PET scans of their brains showed they had improved signaling in the areas responsible for emotional functions and memory, the hypothalamus and the amygdala. They also noted mild improvements in their mood and significant attention span improvements. These benefits weren’t seen among those in the placebo group. Their research was published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry . The researchers believe that these effects could stem from curcumin’s ability to reduce inflammation in the brain, which is linked to Alzheimer’s and depression. In India, where turmeric is considered a dietary staple, senior citizens have better cognitive performance in general and a lower prevalence of Alzheimer’s. ( Natural News ) Green tea already gets a lot of attention for its potential to fight cancer, but there’s another very important benefit that is making the beverage an even more attractive option than it already is. Scientists have found that a compound in green tea can dissolve the protein plaques in blood vessels that can cause heart attacks . Scientists already know that EGCG, or epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a compound found in green tea, can reduce the amyloid plaques in the brain that lead to Alzheimer’s disease. It turns out that this effect also carries over to blood vessels in general, and the life-saving potential of this discovery is huge. When fatty material builds up within the arteries and reduces blood flow to the brain and heart, a protein known as apoA-1 causes further deposits to build up quickly and raises a person’s risk of stroke or heart attack. In this study, researchers from the University of Leeds and Lancaster University found that EGCG can bind to amyloid fibers in apoA-1 and convert them to smaller molecules that are soluble and less likely to cause damage to blood vessels. The researchers are looking for ways to help people increase the EGCG in their blood without drinking massive quantities of green tea. Delicious as it may be, the amounts needed are simply too difficult for many people to get from drinking green tea alone, and there could be side effects from drinking so much of it. They are looking into ways of making EGCG more easily absorbed from the stomach and better able to stand up to metabolism; they’re even considering developing injections that could deliver the molecule directly to the plaques so it can do its work more quickly and effectively. ( Natural News ) Depression is becoming all too common, and so, too, are antidepressants. In today’s instant-gratification-obsessed world, doctors and patients alike are tempted by the lure of a “quick fix” like a drug that can tackle this serious problem. Unfortunately, antidepressants aren’t terribly effective, and the side effects can be even worse than depression itself. That doesn’t mean, however, that there’s nothing people can take to combat their symptoms. In fact, two recent studies have found that consuming friendly bacteria in the form of probiotics can reduce people’s symptoms of depression. One study out of McMaster University in Canada revealed the antidepressant effect of probiotics in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Many IBS suffers also have chronic depression or anxiety as well. The researchers studied 44 adults who have IBS and mild to moderate depression or anxiety. Some were given the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum daily over the course of ten weeks in the study, while others were given a placebo. Just six weeks into the study, the researchers discovered that 64 percent of the patients who took the probiotic had already seen their depression scores go down; this was twice the figure of those in the placebo group. Functional MRIs showed the score improvement was linked to changes in several areas of the brain related to mood control. It’s a promising finding, and the authors would like to see a larger-scale trial confirm their discovery. While this news is great for IBS sufferers, it’s also something that can be applied to the general population, as senior author Dr. Premysi Bercik said: “This opens new avenues not only for the treatment of patients with functional bowel disorders but also for patients with primary psychiatric diseases.” Get CLEAN FOOD and help support our mission to keep you informed : […]
( Natural News ) Health care costs continue to soar in the U.S., and the Affordable Care Act hasn’t really done much to actually make healthcare more affordable. This is part of the reason behind the growing level of health-consciousness in the country, with organic food and other healthy trends gaining popularity as people strive to avoid becoming ill in the first place. Now, a study from Massachusetts General Hospital has found another way to significantly reduce healthcare costs: relaxation response techniques . According to the paper from the Harvard -affiliated institution, stress-related illnesses like depression and anxiety are the third biggest cause of health expenditures in the country, behind only cancer and heart disease – which also happen to be affected by stress. The researchers examined the impact that mind-body interventions such as meditation, yoga, and prayer can have on health care services. They examined data from more than 4,000 people who participated in the Benson-Henry Relaxation Resiliency Program (3RP) between 2006 and 2014 and compared it to a demographically matched group of control patients. After examining the number of health care visits during the period, including lab tests and procedures, they found that those who had participated in the 3RP program had a 43 percent average reduction in health care services during the year that followed their participation. The areas in which the program led to the biggest drop in health care services utilization were gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, neurologic, and cardiovascular. The researchers say that programs that can train people to relax are useful tools for promoting wellness and easing the burden on health care services with no risk and very little cost.
